Job Summary

The John Innes Centre is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health and Safety Specialist to join their team. As a key member of the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance (HSEQA) team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of employees, students, and visitors on site.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide health and safety support to the NBI institutes by reviewing and updating health and safety documentation, including risk assessments and safe working procedures.
  • Offer advice and guidance on health and safety matters, including biological and chemical safety, and respond to emergency incidents when required.
  • Support the Head of HSEQA and their team with the smooth operational of the health and safety management system and its associated processes.
  • Contribute to safety improvement projects on site and participate in laboratory audits and inspections.
  • Provide health and safety support to the Head of HSEQA in relation to NGI projects when required.

Requirements

  • Health and Safety Certificate or equivalent, or actively completing relevant qualification.
  • Bachelor's degree, Master's, or PhD in biology or biochemistry.
  • Biological Safety Qualification.
  • Full UK driving license (desirable).

Desirable Skills

  • Science background, especially biology or biochemistry.
  • Good knowledge and experience of working safely with hazardous materials in laboratory environments.
  • Ability to prepare and review risk assessments, method statements, and standard operating procedures.
  • Good level of proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
