Position Overview

We are excited to present an opportunity for a skilled Dental Surgeon to become a vital member of our team, contributing to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services. University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) serves as a regional trauma center and stands as one of the largest healthcare facilities in the Southwest of England. We are offering a contract of 7-10 PAs along with on-call responsibilities. We seek a candidate with GDC registration and a minimum of 3 years' experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, either as a DCT or SAS, including the management of acute cases during on-call duties. This role provides the chance to join the second on-call team or to develop the necessary skills to do so. Collaboration with fellow team members to plan, coordinate, and deliver patient care is essential. A structured induction and ongoing support will be provided, along with opportunities for professional growth. UHP offers SAS wider opportunities, including roles as a clinical supervisor, educational supervisor, and appraiser. Access to a SAS academic tutor and the SAS personal development fund is also available.

Main Responsibilities

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) department collaborates closely with Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, forming an integral part of our service.

Our dedicated OMFS unit is located within the main hospital, equipped with in-house dental radiography and a specialized OMFS/dental laboratory, along with dedicated office space.

As a member of our approachable team, you will receive educational support, including:

  • Study leave allowance for postgraduate courses or examinations.
  • Support for the development of advanced clinical and professional skills.

Job Responsibilities

As part of the Dental Specialties and Maxillofacial Surgery service, you will collaborate with colleagues in orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and restorative dentistry. Our department features a dental imaging suite and a laboratory staffed by experienced technicians. We maintain strong relationships with the Peninsula Dental School, offering potential opportunities for teaching and research.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate should possess substantial experience in OMFS conditions, including:

  • Dentoalveolar surgery
  • Dental trauma
  • Oral medicine
  • Pediatric dentoalveolar surgery
  • Understanding and management of basic maxillofacial trauma

Experience in managing local anaesthetic (LA) dentoalveolar lists is also required.

This position involves exposure to various aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including:

  • Dentoalveolar surgery (for both adults and children)
  • Facial and dental trauma
  • Orofacial malignancy
  • Oral medicine
  • Treatment of facial deformities

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GDC (UK) Registration with a license to practice.
  • Membership/Fellowship in Dental Surgery or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid UK Driving License or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification or experience.
  • ATLS / ALS / ILS certification.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of four years of postgraduate experience, including at least two years in OMFS at DCT level.
  • Proficiency in dentoalveolar surgery and the ability to manage routine local anaesthetic clinics.

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching and supervision.
  • Evidence of clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Capability to manage routine general anaesthetic day case lists.
