Postdoctoral Researcher

MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team at Brown University. The successful candidate will work on extending the Dedalus framework for the direct statistical simulation of partial differential equations in multi-scale physics and fluid dynamics.

The project involves collaborating with the Dedalus developer team and Profs. Steven Tobias and Brad Marston to provide a flexible package for generating and solving systems of equations for the statistical properties of fluid flows in Cartesian, spherical, and cylindrical geometries. The project will utilize Python's functionality to derive the relevant mathematical equations and use Dedalus' highly accurate machinery to solve the resulting systems.

1. Develop and implement object-oriented and functional programming practices in Python
2. Apply mathematical statistics to analyze and model complex systems
3. Design and implement multi-scale modeling and model-reduction techniques for PDEs
4. Utilize spectral numerical methods to solve complex systems

A background in machine learning or computational optimization would be beneficial in providing relevant skills. The Dedalus project is a community-developed code with a large and diverse user base, and this project will engage in a collaborative development process including public peer-review of code.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in mathematical statistics, PDEs, and computational physics. Excellent programming skills in Python are essential, as well as experience with object-oriented and functional programming practices. A strong publication record and excellent communication skills are also required.

The timeframe for starting this project may be somewhat flexible for an interested candidate with the right background and skills.
