Postdoctoral Researcher Opportunity

MPOWIR Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team at Brown University. This exciting opportunity is part of a collaborative project with the Dedalus developer team and Profs. Steven Tobias and Brad Marston to extend the Dedalus framework for the Direct Statistical Simulation of partial differential equations in multi-scale physics and fluid dynamics.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and implement object-oriented and functional programming practices using Python to derive mathematical equations and solve systems of equations for statistical properties of fluid flows.
  2. Apply mathematical statistics and multi-scale modeling techniques to PDEs, with a focus on spectral numerical methods.
  3. Collaborate with the Dedalus developer team and Profs. Tobias and Marston to develop a flexible package for generating and solving systems of equations.

A background in Machine Learning or computational optimization would be beneficial in this role. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in a collaborative development process, including public peer-review of code. This project combines new areas in statistics, PDEs, and automated computational science, requiring an eagerness to learn and apply diverse mathematical and computational techniques to physical applications.

Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in object-oriented and functional programming practices.
  • Excellent mathematical statistics and multi-scale modeling skills, with a focus on PDEs and spectral numerical methods.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, as well as the opportunity to work with a talented team of researchers and developers. If you are a motivated and talented individual with a passion for computational physics and mathematics, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
