Position Overview

We are seeking dedicated professionals to become part of our esteemed team of Emergency Medicine Consultants at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Our current team comprises Consultants with specialized interests in various fields, including Respiratory Care, Diabetes Management, Renal Health, and Intensive Care.

Key Responsibilities

* Demonstrate proficiency in evaluating patients autonomously within the Emergency Medical Unit, Short-Stay ward, and Same-Day Emergency Care unit, while providing assistance to both registered and non-registered clinical staff as necessary.

* Undertake administrative responsibilities associated with patient management.

* Engage in medical education initiatives, contributing to the development of the multidisciplinary team.

* Actively participate in departmental and directorate meetings.

* Provide support to the department and Trust during emergencies, including appropriate evening and weekend on-call duties.

Job Responsibilities

The position offers 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), which include core Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), with the expectation that career-grade medical staff will undertake additional responsibilities as part of their agreed job plan. This may be adjusted based on additional contributions, such as educational or governance roles. The successful candidate will have responsibilities throughout the department, with opportunities to develop subspecialty interests based on experience and service requirements. Our department embraces flexible working arrangements, and candidates are encouraged to discuss this with the leadership team.

The appointee will adhere to the Trust's standard operating procedures and policies. They will commit to attending accredited conferences and meetings to maintain their continuing professional development, in accordance with national Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, as well as completing mandatory training. The appointee will be accountable to the Clinical Service Lead (CSL) and will participate in an annual job planning and appraisal process as mandated by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice.
  • Evidence of achieving Foundation competencies in alignment with GMC standards and Good Medical Practice.
  • Eligibility to reside and work in the UK.
  • Medical Degree from a recognized institution.

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to Emergency Medicine.
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinions on a variety of acute medical issues.
  • Capability to operate independently in relevant procedures.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit requirements.
  • Completion of at least four years of full-time substantive postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), with at least two years in a specialty training program in a relevant field or as a fixed-term substantive specialty trainee in a relevant specialty (equivalent substantive experience will also be considered).
