Position Overview

The successful candidate will assist the Operational Manager (TRU) by taking on both technical and managerial responsibilities for routine and advanced interpretive analyses within the diagnostic serology service. This role is crucial in ensuring that the department consistently meets or surpasses the service delivery standards established by the laboratory's quality management framework. The individual will be required to participate in various rotas to maintain service continuity, including out-of-hours, extended working days, bank holidays, and weekends.

The candidate will operate as a registered Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC and will collaborate with the broader laboratory team, rotating through different sections and providing support for senior colleagues as needed. Effective communication with medical staff, laboratory personnel, hospital staff, clients, and the public is essential.

As part of the all-Wales Microbiology network, the role may involve responding to public health emergencies, including outbreaks and other urgent situations, at short notice.

Key Responsibilities

The individual will oversee and engage in all facets of specimen processing, conducting both routine and advanced microbiological interpretive analyses in the Toxoplasma Reference laboratory. Responsibilities include:

  • Validating and authorizing laboratory reports while addressing any related issues.
  • Managing the communication of laboratory test results through various channels (paper, electronic, verbal), including urgent results and providing specialist advice regarding sample appropriateness and investigation requests.
  • Participating in quality audits to ensure compliance with the quality management system and contributing to service enhancement through research, evaluation of laboratory methods and equipment, and the implementation of innovative techniques.
  • Engaging in both internal and external quality assurance activities, including the assessment of quality controls, performance monitoring, and the execution of corrective actions when necessary.

  • Ensure HCPC registration is maintained as a condition of employment.

  • Participate in research and evaluation of laboratory methods and equipment.

Analytical and Judgemental Skills

  • Utilize serology and molecular tests for diagnosing and detecting toxoplasma parasites in clinical specimens.
  • Genotype toxoplasma parasites using molecular tests and report results according to established protocols.
  • Manage quality assurance processes and investigate unexpected results.

Planning and Organizational Skills

  • Efficiently manage the reception, storage, testing, reporting, and disposal of specimens.
  • Prioritize and manage daily tasks alongside senior staff.
  • Provide technical training to others on procedures for investigating toxoplasma infections.

Physical Skills

  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and coordination for working with delicate laboratory equipment.

Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Oversee specimen receipt and processing, ensuring accurate results are assigned to the correct samples.
