Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to develop your nursing leadership career as a Ward Manager on our children's specialty ward at Barts Health NHS Trust. Our specialty services include complex respiratory conditions, diabetes, haematology, endocrine, neurology, and general paediatrics.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide expert clinical leadership at ward level, setting and delivering high standards of clinical care.
  • Accountable for the overall management of the ward and the delivery of nursing care.
  • Manage, deploy, and supervise nursing and associated staff.
  • Manage the budget and lead the development of ward nursing practice and standards of care.
  • Responsible for the education of patients and staff.
  • Provide oversight and coordination for the discharge of complex, long-term patients.

Person Specification
  • Essential criteria:
    • RSCN/RN Child with current NMC registration.
    • Preparation for Mentorship course, Practice Assessor course, or equivalent.
    • PILS.
    • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Desirable criteria:
    • Educated to degree level or working towards.
    • Leadership course/development programme.
    • Post-basic qualification relevant to area of practice.
    • EPALS/APLS.
Requirements
  • Managerial experience.
  • Experience of working within acute paediatrics.
  • Experience of audit in the clinical arena.
  • Experience of facilitating positive working relationships between staff and families with long-term, complex health and social needs.
  • Experience managing complex patients and discharge planning.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Essential criteria:
    • Knowledge of common specialty conditions such as diabetes, sickle cell anaemia, seizure disorders, dystonia.
    • Knowledge of complex airway management including tracheostomy and Non-invasive ventilation.
    • Ability to implement change to improve patient care.
    • Planning and delivery of education and training at all levels.
    • Clinical leadership skills.
    • Adaptable and able to deal with changing workload.
  • Desirable criteria:
    • Ability to collect and analyse data using computerized reporting systems.
    • Budget management.
    • Knowledge of 'Health Roster'.
Personal and People Development
  • Essential criteria:
    • Positive attitude and ability to work under pressure.
    • Takes responsibility for own learning and individual performance review (IPR).
    • Able to organise, prioritise, and delegate appropriately.
    • Monitors and supports the development of junior staff.
    • Ensures IPRs are undertaken for all staff the post holder.
    • Appropriately manages staff in relation to recruitment, performance, and absence as per policy.
  • Desirable criteria:
    • Is proactive in seeking out different styles and methods of communicating to assist longer-term needs and aims.
Communication
  • Essential criteria:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Able to effectively and appropriately communicate with other members of the MDT, senior staff, colleagues, as well as patients and their families.
    • Provides feedback to other workers on their communication at appropriate times.
    • Clear and concise documentation.
    • Communicates in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
