Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Catering Assistant at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. As a key member of our food production team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the provision of high-quality catering services to our patients, staff, and visitors.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation, distribution, and service of food production to patients, staff, and visitors, ensuring the correct and economical use of materials and equipment.
  • Clean and maintain premises and equipment to correct standards of cleanliness and frequencies laid down in cleaning schedules and departmental hygiene policies.
  • Operate and clean automatic industrial dishwashers, and prepare and cook simple food items, such as salads, sandwiches, and breakfasts, in accordance with department-standardized recipes.
  • Plate and serve meals and beverages to patients and staff, and temperature probe meals and record temperatures in accordance with department policies.
  • Issue food items to wards, store, rotate, and maintain min/max stock levels, and fill, clean, and look after ward beverage trolleys, fridges, and restaurant vending machines.
  • Handle cash, check floats, and secure takings in accordance with the Trust's Standing Financial Instructions, and complete any appropriate documentation as directed.
  • Frequently handle heavy equipment and food items, and prepare cutlery and other items in readiness for patient meal service.
  • Collect patient information, menus, and dietary requirements using paper and electronic methods, and complete training and utilize skills in all aspects of the job role as directed.

Person Specification
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Knowledge of the potential of cross-contamination within a catering/healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP).
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of specialized diets.
Experience
  • Ability to work on your own or in a team on a regular basis without direct supervision.
  • Experience of working as part of a large team and the ability to work on one's own initiative when required.
  • Experience of cleaning in a food environment or similar environment.
Qualifications
  • Possess or willing to complete Foundation Food Hygiene Qualification or equivalent.
  • Possess or be willing to complete NVQ Level 2 Hospitality/Customer Care or equivalent.
