We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as a Healthcare Assistant at The Avenue Surgery. As a key member of our clinical team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities- Work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and adhere to practice guidelines and protocols to provide quality health and care services.
- Undertake tasks after receiving full training and assessment, and record and follow guidelines for tasks for which you have received appropriate training.
- Develop phlebotomy skills, including near-patient testing for INR, blood glucose, and cholesterol.
- Process patient samples for dispatch to hospital laboratories, including body fluids such as urine, faeces, and sputum.
- Measure and record patient blood pressure, reporting any measurements outside of the norm to the appropriate clinician using the practice Hypertension protocol.
- Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during, and after patient care interventions, ensuring clinical treatment rooms are clean and well-stocked.
- Clean touch-point surfaces to prevent the spread of Covid-19 throughout the practice.
- Contribute to long-term condition monitoring and NHS Health Check screening.
- Develop basic computer literacy, including the ability to use emails.
- Accurately and contemporaneously record patient contact using appropriate templates and read coding, including recording QOF data and patient self-care advice.
- Notify the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues.
- Liaise with and assist members of the administrative team.
- Act as a chaperone when requested.
- Respect patient confidentiality and maintain the trust placed in us by patients.
- Ensure that all confidential information is handled in accordance with practice policies and procedures.
- Implement and lead on the promotion and management of health and safety and infection control within the practice.
- Use personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
- Aware of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory/contractual/professional requirements.
- Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimen process.
- Responsible for personal hand hygiene and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Identify risks involved in work activities and undertake such activities in a way that manages those risks.
- Make effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
- Monitor practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control.
- Safely manage sharps procedures.
- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in a tidy, clean, and safe way.
- Actively identify, report, and correct health and safety hazards and infection hazards immediately.
- Keep own work areas and general/patient areas clean and sterile, identifying issues and hazards in relation to other work areas.
- Undertake periodic infection control training.
- Manage waste, including collection, handling, segregation, container management, storage, and collection.
- Control spillage and decontamination procedures.
- Maintain sterile environments.
- Demonstrate due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults.
- Support the equality, diversity, and rights of patients, carers, and colleagues.
- Act in a way that recognizes the importance of people's rights and interprets them in a way that is consistent with practice procedures and policies.
- Respect the privacy, dignity, needs, and beliefs of patients, carers, and colleagues.
- Participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment.
- Take responsibility for own development, learning, and performance.
- Complete annual mandatory training modules.
- Strive to maintain quality within the practice.
- Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk.
- Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions.
- Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities.

- Participate in audit where appropriate.
It will be necessary to attend and contribute to various practice meetings as requested. The only reason for not attending will be annual, study, or sick leave.
