Position Overview

The General Surgery Operations Leader is an essential position within the Operational Management Team. The individual in this role will oversee the operational execution of the General Surgery Directorate, ensuring the successful application of both national and local strategies while meeting service objectives and targets, including national standards for cancer wait times and timely access to treatment (RTT). The Operations Leader will collaborate with the Deputy Operations Director, Operations Director, Clinical Leads, and Clinical Director to establish a service strategy and implement the operational plan for the Care Group.

This role is pivotal in ensuring that the requirements of the General Surgery Directorate are integrated into corporate plans, while simultaneously enhancing awareness within the Directorate of national and local planning mandates.

The individual will have comprehensive oversight of the General Surgery administrative teams.

Key Responsibilities

Direct and manage services in collaboration with Lead Clinicians and Matrons, while fostering effective working relationships with consultant medical staff and the senior nursing team. Ensure that the operational and financial aspects of the service are effectively coordinated and managed. Develop patient-centered services, identifying future financial, capital, and workforce needs while ensuring that contractual, financial, and performance targets are achieved. Collaborate with the Surgical Services Care Group to coordinate the development of capacity plans and efficiency initiatives. Lead and coordinate the execution of delivery plans for the services, ensuring optimal service capacity utilization and compliance with information reporting requirements. Establish robust processes to monitor activity, maximize resource utilization, and meet financial performance objectives. Ensure frameworks are in place to support continuous improvement and innovation, delivering efficient and effective care pathways that enhance patient outcomes and reduce hospital stays. Provide clinical administrative services at a high standard, ensuring that outpatient services, inpatient scheduling, and waiting list management facilitate the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of clinical services. Build partnerships with colleagues in other services and Primary Care to enhance patient access to services. Develop Business Cases for Service Developments and Capital Projects as necessary.

This diverse role, with substantial responsibilities, will be instrumental in defining the strategy and future direction of the General Surgery Directorate.

Experience in financial planning and the design and implementation of efficiency schemes. Extensive experience in report writing and strong presentation skills.
