Radiotherapy Patient Support Specialist

London, Greater London, United Kingdom University College London Hospitals Full time

Job Overview

This position presents a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the radiotherapy and proton beam therapy review team at University College London Hospitals. The successful candidate will rotate between the photon and proton departments, playing a pivotal role in the Radiotherapy Review Team. This role entails assessing patients throughout their treatment and providing essential physical and psychological support during their radiotherapy journey.

The individual will be responsible for ensuring a comprehensive plan is in place for the on-treatment review of each patient, alongside establishing effective communication with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT).

A key aspect of this role involves assisting patients in comprehending the treatment process, potential toxicity, and expected side effects of radiotherapy. The specialist will also offer guidance on self-care strategies and symptom management. Necessary training related to proton and photon beam therapy, including side effect management and independent/supplementary prescribing, will be provided.

The photon department is equipped with advanced Varian TrueBeam systems, complete with sophisticated imaging capabilities and 6DoF couches. Additionally, the department features a comprehensive brachytherapy suite and a Gulmay skin unit. UCLH is one of the few NHS sites delivering proton beam therapy across the UK.

Main Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Review Radiographers, Radiotherapy Sisters, and Staff Nurses, taking a leadership role within the review team.
  • Conduct patient assessments during their photon or proton treatment and provide both physical and psychological support throughout their care.
  • Develop and implement a structured plan for the on-treatment review of each patient, ensuring effective communication regarding any adverse effects.
  • Lead service evaluations, audits, and quality improvement projects within the Review Team framework.
  • Mentor and support the development and appraisal of Review Team members.
  • Facilitate patient understanding of the treatment process, potential toxicity, and likely side effects of radiotherapy, encouraging proactive reporting of side effects and advising on symptom management.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate treatment of patients' side effects.
  • Provide verbal and written information as necessary.
  • Create an environment where patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and feel supported during their treatment.
  • Refer patients to other healthcare professionals, such as dieticians and counselors, as needed.
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up arrangements are established, maintaining continuity of care and communication with patients and relevant healthcare professionals.
