Position Overview

The Senior Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist will serve as a key practitioner in overseeing the management, enhancement, and effective operation of the Lymphoedema service. The individual in this role will be responsible for delivering specialized lymphoedema guidance, support, education, and training to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, grounded in current evidence, research, and best practice standards. A profound understanding of chronic oedema, lipoedema, and both primary and secondary lymphoedema is essential. The role includes managing a clinical caseload, adhering to high professional standards, and utilizing advanced clinical and theoretical expertise to function autonomously while maintaining accurate records.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist will:

  • Lead and develop the lymphoedema team to deliver community-based lymphoedema services.
  • Assume professional and legal accountability for all aspects of personal practice in accordance with the standards set by the trust and relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Support and mentor all members of the lymphoedema service team.
  • Exhibit a high level of expertise in managing complex cases, including pediatric patients, while assessing and mitigating clinical risks within their caseload.
  • Employ advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practices to conduct holistic patient assessments and implement appropriate lymphoedema management plans.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

The Senior Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist will be expected to:

  • Act as an expert practitioner, leading the management and development of the Lymphoedema service.
  • Provide specialized advice and training based on current evidence and best practices.
  • Maintain a clinical caseload, ensuring high standards of care and accurate record-keeping.
  • Participate in research initiatives to enhance care equity for patients with lymphoedema.
  • Deliver professional leadership and educational support across community services for ongoing patient care.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN)
  • Qualification in Lymphoedema Management or willingness to pursue further education in nursing or related fields.
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) qualification.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant clinical experience.
  • Experience in teaching and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct.

Desirable Criteria

  • Prescribing Qualification (NMP V300).
  • Experience in community nursing and involvement in quality improvement projects.
