Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a skilled and experienced midwife to lead the newborn screening and BCG immunisation programme at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting a sensitive and systematic approach to the management of the programme, ensuring that it is delivered in line with the recommendations of the UK National Screening Committee and the appropriate Service Specifications.

Main Responsibilities
  • Clinical Role
    • Work clinically within the maternity unit 50% of the time
    • Support the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) and Newborn Bloodspot Testing (NST) programmes
    • Undertake BCG immunisation clinics
    • Provide information and support to service users
    • Communicate sensitive information to women, families, and midwives
    • Deal with clients in emotionally difficult situations
  • Service Delivery & Improvement
    • Be involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care, including guideline development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
    • Contribute to service development using quality improvement methodology
    • Inform the screening lead midwife of any emerging safety or quality issues
  • Risk Management & Governance
    • Monitor and maintain quality standards of newborn screening and BCG immunisation
    • Oversee the use of the NIPE SMART system
    • Ensure compliance with the newborn screening programmes
  • Corporate
    • Deliver updates for staff regarding newborn screening and BCG immunisation
    • Act as a mentor for midwives undertaking the NIPE course
    • Contribute to the education and development of student midwives
Requirements
  • NIPE qualified and experienced
  • BCG trained and experienced
  • Knowledge and experience in all areas of maternity services
  • Ability to teach and supervise learners
  • Well-developed IT skills
  • Effective communicator
