Position Overview

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department is seeking to appoint a full-time Qualified Orthopaedic Technician. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in various plastering techniques and hold the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Certificate. A compassionate and empathetic demeanor is essential, as is a passion for enhancing the patient experience. This role is situated within a highly active department, and the successful applicant will be expected to engage in all facets of Fracture, Orthopaedic, Telephone Fracture Clinic, and Specialist Paediatric Clinic (Ponseti and serial casting). The department also provides support to Emergency Departments, Wards, and Theatres as required. In addition to standard cast applications, familiarity with Focus Removable Casting, Remove at Home, and Total Contact techniques, along with various splint-making and orthotic applications, is necessary. The post holder will undertake responsibilities as directed by the Lead/Senior Technician to ensure the effective delivery of services. This role demands a well-organized approach, meticulous attention to detail, and proficiency in both communication and administrative tasks. A comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge base is crucial for delivering outstanding care to patients requiring cast and splint applications during their treatment journey. This position presents an excellent opportunity for skill enhancement and the updating of existing competencies, with full training and support provided as needed.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will function as a Trained Orthopaedic Technician within a collaborative team, delivering services to Trauma and Orthopaedics, A&E, Urgent Care Centres, Wards, Theatres, and other departments across the Trust. The post holder will provide both direct and indirect high-level care for patients in Fracture, Orthopaedic, and Paediatric Clinics, as well as in Wards, Theatres, and other areas of the Trust.

As the organization evolves, there may be a necessity to modify the tasks and/or responsibilities of the post holder. Such adjustments will be made in consultation with the individual, aiming for mutual agreement on any reasonable changes.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • British Orthopaedic Association Casting Certificate
  • Literacy, Numeracy, and ICT GCSE A-C or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

  • Evidence of research-based practice.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

  • Understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary for personal and team development.

Desirable Experience and Knowledge

  • Advanced plaster applications including FRC, total contact, Ponseti, and serial casting.
  • Ability to develop a portfolio and provide evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional and Personal Development (CPPD).
