Role Overview

The successful candidate will play a vital role in delivering educational programs focused on Chinese language, translation, and interpreting across various academic levels.

Detailed Responsibilities

LINCS is actively seeking a dedicated full-time educator to join our team under a Teaching & Research contract. The individual will also have the chance to engage in courses for additional languages offered within the department (BSL, French, German, and Spanish) as qualified, and contribute to cultural studies-related subjects. We are looking for an emerging researcher with a growing research agenda that aligns with the department's existing specializations. Administrative involvement will also be part of the role.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Deliver teaching and assessment for academic programs while supporting colleagues in the execution of courses and activities that align with the university's objectives. Create and develop relevant educational materials in suitable formats for the aforementioned programs. Contribute to the curriculum's content, design, and delivery, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning experiences in collaboration with colleagues and adhering to the university's international standards. Regularly review teaching methods based on feedback from students and peers. Assist in the accreditation processes of professional organizations. Guide and mentor students, including PhD candidates, providing constructive and timely feedback, both formative and summative. Offer pastoral support and recognize when to refer students for additional assistance. Play a crucial role in enhancing the overall student learning and living experience. Enhance subject expertise in line with the latest research developments, ensuring these advancements are integrated into teaching practices and materials. Engage in research activities within one or more of the school's research domains at an internationally competitive level. Establish and maintain strong connections with industry, external organizations, and the educational sector. Collaborate with colleagues across the UK and other campuses, as well as with external networks for information exchange, shared learning, and future collaborative opportunities. Actively promote and market the university, contributing to effective student recruitment and achieving recruitment targets. Participate fully in Open Days and other recruitment events. Take on leadership and administrative responsibilities related to program planning, examination boards, and progression boards as directed. Engage in relevant committee work. Commit to continuous professional development (CPD) and participate in staff development initiatives.

About Our Team

LINCS provides undergraduate courses in Languages, Interpreting & Translation, Cultures and Communication, as well as Masters-level programs in Translation, Interpreting, and Intercultural Business Communication. Staff engage in research on diverse topics related to language policy, linguistics, translation and interpreting, migration, culture, and heritage, and supervise PhD students on similar themes and interdisciplinary projects.

Education & Qualifications

A PhD in a relevant field, or near completion with scheduled viva voce examinations. Equivalent experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Mandarin Chinese as a first language with near-native proficiency in English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CERF). Experience in teaching and assessing Chinese interpreting/translation at the university level, or suitable professional experience in interpreting/translation with some teaching background. A developing research agenda that complements the department's strengths, particularly in areas such as AI, computer-assisted interpreting, intercultural business studies, or professional interpreting/translation practice. Plans for actively pursuing external research funding. Experience or knowledge in designing, teaching, and assessing modules, with the ability to connect teaching to research and industry needs. Evidence of delivering excellent teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Experience in a similar educational environment. Proficiency in relevant IT applications. Strong interpersonal skills. A proactive and professional approach. Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a dynamic and changing environment.

Desirable

Experience in other areas of LINCS teaching and Continuing Professional Development activities. Professional experience in interpreting and/or translation. Post-doctoral research experience in a relevant field. Published or forthcoming research in relevant academic journals. Proficiency in an additional language taught in LINCS (BSL, French, German, Spanish) at near-native level.
