Position Overview

The Cancer Services division at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is in search of a dedicated and skilled Clinical Nurse Specialist to enhance our Acute Oncology Service (AOS). This role is designed for a full-time professional who is eager to collaborate with the Acute Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

We seek an individual with substantial experience and a strong drive to contribute to the growth of our AOS service, ultimately enhancing the care provided to our patients.

This position offers a unique opportunity to be involved in the evolution and expansion of our service, assisting in the implementation of an innovative care model while providing education and support to various teams, including those focused on tumour sites, Emergency Care, and ward staff.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with the ANP and the clinical lead for Acute Oncology, the successful candidate will oversee the clinical management of patients presenting with complications related to their cancer, treatment side effects, or new cancer diagnoses. This includes managing patients with unknown primary cancers.

This role will be crucial in the development, promotion, and execution of a new service model, with a strong emphasis on ongoing education for colleagues at all levels.

The post holder will operate with a high degree of autonomy and demonstrate exceptional leadership capabilities. Advanced communication skills are essential, as the role involves conveying complex and sensitive information effectively.

Job Requirements

The AOS Clinical Nurse Specialist will collaborate with the ANP to conduct assessments, implement patient care plans, and provide guidance for patients presenting with acute issues stemming from their cancer or its treatment.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • First level RGN registration
  • Teaching qualification (e.g., ENB 998) or extensive experience
  • Degree-level education
  • Relevant post-registration qualifications in oncology, haematology, or palliative care
  • Evidence of recent professional development

Desirable:

  • Education or progress towards a Master's degree
  • Clinical Examination Module at Level 6/7 or willingness to pursue
  • Psychological support training at Level 2
  • Post-registration experience
  • Advanced communication skills

Knowledge Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in the healthcare sector with staff management
  • Current knowledge of cancer, palliative care, and end-of-life issues
  • Significant post-registration experience in oncology
  • Understanding of cancer patient and caregiver challenges
  • Experience across various care settings
  • Evidence of innovation and change management
  • Understanding of the Key Worker role
  • Knowledge of oncological emergencies

Desirable:

  • Understanding of achieving world-class cancer outcomes
  • Familiarity with the NHS Long Term Plan 2022
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes

Experience Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in oncology or palliative care, with post-registration experience at Band 6
  • Teaching and educating nurses and patients
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with multi-professional and cultural organizations
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical skills in complex care management
  • Experience in providing multidisciplinary education
  • Experience in research and audit to support clinical governance
  • Practical experience in change management and project management
