Salary: £34,031 after training

Who are we?

Great Western Railway (GWR) is a distinguished steward of one of the most celebrated railways globally. We operate some of the latest trains in the nation and have ambitious plans to enhance our services. With over one hundred million passenger journeys annually, we connect travelers to more than 280 stations across the South West, from scenic Cornwall and South Wales to the vibrant city of London, traversing through picturesque landscapes and some of the UK's premier tourist attractions.

We are dedicated to transforming perceptions of train travel, empowering our diverse team of over 6,500 individuals to create exceptional experiences for our customers. Together, we aim to elevate rail travel as a unique and cherished mode of transportation.

About the team?

Conductors are integral members of the On Train team, collaborating closely with colleagues from Revenue Protection, particularly our Ticket Examiners. You will also coordinate with the train driver and station personnel.

About the job?

As a Conductor, your role will be to provide an outstanding customer experience throughout the journey while ensuring the safety of all passengers utilizing GWR services. You will need to adapt to various individuals, environments, and circumstances. At GWR, we take pride in our shared values, which guide us in delivering exceptional service to our customers and supporting our communities across the West. While working on our trains, you will exemplify these principles and attitudes.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Acting as an ambassador for Great Western Railway by ensuring the highest standards of customer service and safety.
  • Being visible to our customers, offering information and assistance in a friendly and reassuring manner.
  • Managing the safety and operational aspects of the train.
  • Checking and selling tickets, providing necessary information and support.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and pleasant environment on board.
About you?

If you can affirmatively respond to the following questions, you may be the ideal candidate for this position:
  • Are you enthusiastic and proactive about delivering exceptional customer service?
  • Are you committed to performing at your best and presenting a professional image?
  • Can you demonstrate flexibility in your work schedule, including the ability to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays?
  • Are you comfortable operating within a strictly regulated industry with numerous rules and procedures?
  • Can you maintain composure when faced with unexpected challenges?
What do I need?
  • A solid understanding of customer needs.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • The capacity to build relationships and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Experience in front-line customer service roles.
  • The confidence to handle challenging situations effectively.
About the location?

This position is based at a new depot near a major station, where you will commence and conclude your shifts.

Additional information?

Your shifts will include early starts and late finishes, as well as weekends and holidays. You will be expected to work an average of 35 hours per week. Starting and finishing times may coincide with periods when public transport is unavailable, so you must have reliable transportation to and from the station. It is essential to reside within a 60-minute travel time of the depot.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

The Reward?

In addition to a supportive team environment and comprehensive training, all GWR employees enjoy a variety of benefits, including ongoing development opportunities, a defined benefit pension scheme, complimentary rail travel across the GWR network for you and your family, a company-sponsored healthcare plan, discounts on shopping and gym memberships, and an employee assistance program.

We all belong at GWR. Our vision is to foster an inclusive environment for all employees, ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates to access meaningful employment. We value diversity in age, gender, LGBTQIA, ethnicity, religion, and disability. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of prejudice against our colleagues, customers, and future talent.

We celebrate and encourage diverse perspectives, innovative working methods, and the growth and success of all our employees.
