We are excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated Aquatic Ecology Research Assistant to join our esteemed team at UKCEH. In this role, you will play a vital part in advancing scientific knowledge and providing essential data and insights to address pressing environmental issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support fieldwork campaigns and routine monitoring, including boat-based assessments in freshwater ecosystems.
  • Conduct laboratory analyses of water samples to evaluate their chemical characteristics and biological communities.
  • Assist in water quality modeling, including data preparation, model execution, and result summarization.
  • Contribute to project reporting by summarizing data and assisting in the interpretation of findings.

This position requires a high degree of independence, so you should be adept at managing your workload and making sound decisions while knowing when to seek guidance. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential for success in both field and laboratory settings.

Current Projects Include:

  • The UKCEH Aquatic Mesocosm Facility, which facilitates controlled studies on shallow lake ecosystems to assess the impacts of climate change.
  • A comprehensive long-term lake monitoring program across England and Scotland, providing critical data for environmental modeling and management.
  • The Cumbrian Lakes monitoring initiative, renowned for its extensive data collection on physical, chemical, and biological parameters.

Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or Zoology.
  • Experience in fieldwork, particularly in freshwater environments, with a passion for outdoor work in diverse weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with laboratory practices, including chemical analysis and species identification.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with team members.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in all tasks.
  • A valid UK manual driving license for travel to various sites.

While not mandatory, experience in data interpretation and knowledge of statistical methods, along with programming skills in languages such as Python or R, would be advantageous.
