Leeds, Leeds, United Kingdom NHS Resolution Full time

Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a skilled and motivated Obstetrician to become part of the NHS Resolution's Early Notification (EN) team as a National Clinical Fellow in Obstetrics on a fixed-term or secondment basis for a duration of one year. The selected candidate will be expected to commence their role promptly, subject to agreement with the relevant deanery. There are also two additional positions anticipated to be available in the near future, should there be interest indicated in the application.

Since the inception of the EN scheme in April 2017, NHS Resolution has mandated that all maternity services report incidents that may lead to long-term severe brain injury. The primary objectives of this initiative are:

  • To investigate potential eligibility for compensation while taking proactive measures to minimize legal expenses and enhance the experience for families and affected personnel;
  • To disseminate learning swiftly with individual trusts and the broader system to foster safety improvements and prevent recurrence of similar incidents;
  • To build upon our initiatives focused on transparency and fairness, ensuring that the compensation process does not hinder openness, honesty, and learning;
  • To preserve evidence to adequately respond to any future claims that families may pursue;
  • To streamline the compensation process for families, addressing needs in real-time to mitigate the risk of escalating claims.

Key Responsibilities

This role presents a unique chance to engage at a national level and contribute to enhancing outcomes in maternity care. A significant portion of the responsibilities will involve overseeing and managing the workload for a designated region in England, reviewing case files, and providing constructive feedback on how to effectively learn from claims to avert future harm.

Additional duties encompass the opportunity to spearhead a project within the organization, represent NHS Resolution at external engagements with key stakeholders in maternity care, lead the triage of cases reported to the scheme, and collaborate with the EN family liaison and mediation lead, as well as the broader team, to support the scheme's development. The role also includes delivering presentations both internally and externally for Trusts.
