About the Role

The National Audit Office (NAO) is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Executive Director to join our team. As a key member of the Executive Team, you will play a critical role in shaping the NAO's strategy and direction, and will be responsible for leading a team of around 200 financial and performance auditors.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have significant senior experience of leading the delivery of complex professional work programmes, and will be capable of building a visible presence and strong personal engagement with colleagues across the NAO. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Business Management: Working collectively with Executive Team colleagues to achieve the NAO's strategic objectives.
  • External Relationship Management: Interacting with key audited bodies and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery, raise the NAO's profile, and extend its influence.
  • Service Delivery: Providing strategic leadership for the delivery of a portfolio of work, including leading key aspects of client engagement and ensuring the delivery of work that achieves greatest impact and influence.
  • Group Accountability: Personal responsibility for leading a team of around 200 highly skilled financial auditors and performance auditors, driving performance, and enabling continuous improvement.
  • Ways of Working: Acting as a role model for our people and exemplifying positive business behaviours, including collaborative and inclusive ways of working.

Skills and Capabilities

We are looking for a high-quality corporate leader with significant senior experience of leading the delivery of complex professional work programmes. The successful candidate will be capable of leading around 200 financial and performance auditors in delivering the NAO's new strategy. Key skills and capabilities required include:

  • Ambitious: Challenging self, other colleagues, and the NAO to deliver our best with stretching but achievable vision and goals.

The National Audit Office (NAO) is the UK's independent public spending watchdog. We support Parliament in holding government to account and help improve public services through our high-quality audits. We are independent of government and the civil service, and our work is overseen by the Public Accounts Commission, a parliamentary committee of MPs.
