Become a vital member of the Swansea Bay University Health Board as a Senior Psychiatric Consultant, where you will play a key role in enhancing mental health services and contributing to a comprehensive 24-hour admission framework supported by specialized treatment units. This position offers a unique chance to influence and implement meaningful improvements, backed by a collaborative management team dedicated to partnering with clinical professionals.

Your primary responsibility will be to oversee the clinical management of inpatients, ensuring the effective execution of Care and Treatment Plans, while delegating tasks and collaborating with a diverse team of healthcare professionals.

This consultant position is based within a dedicated ward, conveniently located for easy access from various regions. By accepting this role, you will join a seasoned Mental Health inpatient service focused on delivering care to individuals with mental health challenges, emphasizing the development of skills necessary for reintegration into community life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hold a valid medical qualification, with MRC Psych or an equivalent credential.
  • Demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in initiating service enhancements.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of contemporary advancements in psychiatry and mental health.
  • Possess extensive knowledge of change management, relevant legislation, and current issues in mental health, along with experience in contractual matters related to healthcare services.

In addition to reaching the top of the Consultant pay scale within a specified timeframe, you will also be eligible for a commitment award every three years, following the attainment of the maximum pay scale, with potential earnings up to a specified amount annually. Currently, there are additional recruitment incentive payments available for new consultants at the initial points of the pay scale.

Candidate Profile:

Qualifications:

Essential:
  • Registered on the Specialist Register with the GMC as a specialist in Adult Psychiatry or eligible for CCT within six months.

Desirable:

  • Additional relevant qualifications or diplomas.
  • Teaching qualifications or advanced credentials in medical education.

Experience:

Essential:
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in teaching and training medical staff at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Demonstrated capability in initiating, conducting, and completing audits.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a management role within a healthcare setting.
  • Background in mental health research.
  • Familiarity with NHS operations and practices.
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities associated with the role of Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership abilities.
  • Proficient teaching skills.

Desirable:

  • Clinical competencies, including proficiency in the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
