Position Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated Aquatic Ecology Consultant to join our national team, with preferred locations in Leeds and Nottingham.

This role involves conducting fieldwork in Aquatic Ecology, preparing reports, analyzing data, and coordinating efforts for both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring high standards of technical quality while adhering to program and budget constraints.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting aquatic surveys in freshwater environments.
  • Collaborating with other environmental professionals on various projects, both large and small.
  • Collecting and processing freshwater macroinvertebrate samples in the lab, performing benthic macroinvertebrate surveys, and assisting with fieldwork and sample collection (including macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, phytobenthos, fisheries, and water quality).
  • Supporting data entry, analysis, and processing for freshwater initiatives, contributing to survey reports and ecological assessments while liaising with project managers and clients.
  • Delivering consultancy and advisory services with a focus on technical excellence, prioritizing safety and security in all activities.
  • Assisting with fieldwork, sample collection, and data analysis for various freshwater projects.
  • Contributing to desk studies and literature reviews.
  • Participating in data capture, collation, and presentation, ensuring survey reports and ecological assessments meet high technical standards and deadlines.
  • Assisting in the creation of Environmental Impact Assessment documents in accordance with CIEEM guidelines.
  • Engaging with the broader Water Environment Team, internal project managers, and clients as needed.

Team Collaboration:

You will engage in monitoring and impact assessment projects for Water Companies, Regulators, and private clients, including renewable energy projects.

Our Aquatic Ecology team consists of over 20 specialists across the UK, with laboratories located in Nottingham and Leeds, as well as a southern hub.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a self-sufficient individual who thrives on challenges and enjoys collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines. You should be adaptable and flexible to meet varying demands, with the potential for occasional longer hours and short trips away from home.

  • Experience in aquatic ecology surveys, including fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, and River Habitat Surveys.
  • A degree or MSc in a relevant field, with prior experience in aquatic ecology or a related role.
  • Membership in CIEEM or a similar professional organization, or eligibility for membership.
  • Relevant training, which may include Water Safety and First Aid.
  • Understanding of current environmental legislation, including the Water Framework Directive.
  • Ability to maintain internal and external client relationships, providing urgent ecological responses and advice as necessary.
  • Willingness to travel to various sites.
