Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Electrical Biomedical Equipment Technician to join our team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialized clinical technical services to repair, maintain, and perform electrical safety testing of complex and patient-critical equipment used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical and biomedical engineering, with experience in working with medical devices and equipment. They will be responsible for communicating with clinical users to gain a full understanding of the nature of fault or problem with the medical equipment, assessing the seriousness of the issues and implications, and responding appropriately to the urgency of the requests.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for contributing to the planned preventative maintenance systems for the equipment, producing comprehensive reports for each repair/maintenance job carried out, and providing first-line training for clinical staff within the Trust.

The role will involve working closely with the Head of EBME and other EBME staff to ensure the efficient running of the department, and will require the ability to prioritize and manage own workload in accordance with departmental procedures and service demands.

The successful candidate will be expected to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels. They will also be expected to have a strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and building systems, and to be able to lift and move medical equipment around the workshop and wards.

The role will also involve participating in clinical trials and equipment evaluations, and carrying out all duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work act, statutory regulations, approved codes of conduct, and local rules.

The successful candidate will be responsible for generating new jobs on the EBME database, keeping the database up to date, and providing specialist non-clinical advice to Clinical and non-clinical members of staff, relating to medical devices.

The role will also involve working with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to resolve repair and maintenance issues, obtain technical specifications, and procure spare parts.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a current driving license and to be able to work unsupervised when out and about in the hospital.

The role will also involve participating in a departmental 'On-call' rota to provide an emergency out of hours service, and dealing directly with patients who use hospital equipment at home.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Undertake advanced fault finding processes to diagnose faults and carry out repair and maintenance for all equipment within the EBME department remit.
  2. Contribute to the efficient running of the planned Preventative Maintenance scheme to ensure equipment is regularly checked for safety and functions to manufacturer's specifications.
  3. Carry out calibration and quality control checks, and acceptance and electrical safety testing in accordance with local procedures.
  4. Contribute to the departmental defect and failure computerized reporting system and ensure scientific and technical records are recorded to high standards for future reference.
  5. Inform the Head of EBME and other EBME staff of the performance or condition of equipment in the post holder's remit.
  6. Act as an identified technician for clinical areas, acting as a first point of contact for clinical issues in relation to medical equipment.
  7. Prioritize and manage own workload in accordance with departmental procedures and service demands.
  8. Ensure all works carried out are within a quality framework and meet manufacturers and regulatory requirements.
  9. Have regular meetings with the Head of EBME and propose changes to departmental work methods and policies.
  10. Practice appropriate workshop techniques so that the department is clean and tidy to ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
  11. Assist in maintaining an adequate stock of spares so that the most immediate component parts are available to affect a timely service to the user.
  12. Assist Medical and Nursing managers in the procurement and acceptance testing of new equipment in line with current Codes of Practice.
  13. Provide training, advice, and liaise with Operational and Clinical staff on aspects of equipment usage.
  14. Train other technicians in the full range of techniques and methods used in the EBME Department.
  15. Participate in clinical trials and equipment evaluations.
  16. Carry out all duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work act, statutory regulations, approved codes of conduct, and local rules.
  17. Attend training sessions to improve knowledge and personal development and thereby enable the department to provide a better service.
  18. Participate in a departmental 'On-call' rota to provide an emergency out of hours service.
  19. Deal directly with patients who use hospital equipment at home.
  20. Carry out any other duties deemed necessary by the Head of EBME that are appropriate for the grade to ensure the appropriate levels of service are maintained by the department.
