Position Overview

Join our dedicated team at Wiltshire Council as a Child Welfare Specialist, focusing on enhancing the lives of children through effective kinship and fostering services.

Role Summary

As part of our esteemed Children's Services, we are seeking a qualified professional with significant experience in social work to contribute to our Countywide Kinship and Fostering team. We prioritize the development of our staff, offering diverse training opportunities, including participation in peer reflection groups and collaborative projects across various Children's Services.

This specialized service is committed to supporting special guardians, connected person foster care, and private fostering arrangements. You will collaborate with a passionate team of professionals dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of children in need of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments for foster care applicants, special guardianship, and connected persons, providing essential support to these individuals.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and external services, employing a trauma-informed approach to enhance the quality and stability of placements.
  • Manage the reviewing process for all foster carers, ensuring compliance with statutory duties and departmental policies.
  • Participate in the fostering service duty system to effectively manage placement requests and match children with suitable carers.
  • Deliver comprehensive training and support to foster carers, aiming to increase capacity and retention within the fostering community.
  • Act as the primary worker for Children in Need and Children Looked After, ensuring their needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
  • Conduct thorough investigations and assessments of vulnerable children and young people, considering their wishes and those of their families.
  • Develop and implement action plans in collaboration with children, young people, and their families to address identified issues.
  • Facilitate regular reviews of individual plans, documenting outcomes and adjusting strategies as necessary.
  • Convene core group meetings to assist in the implementation and review of plans for vulnerable children.
  • Prepare reports for various meetings and hearings, ensuring accurate documentation of casework.
  • Maintain confidentiality and work in partnership with other agencies to deliver coordinated services that promote positive outcomes.
  • Contribute positively to team dynamics and participate in ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Professional Social Work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance regarding child protection.
  • Experience in working with children in care and their families.
  • Strong assessment skills and the ability to engage effectively with service users and other professionals.
  • Excellent report writing and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice.

Desirable:

  • A post-qualifying award in Social Work or a Practice Teachers Award.
  • Experience in delivering training and supervising staff or students.
