Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Forensic Healthcare Specialist. As a Police Custody Nurse/Paramedic, you will play a critical role in delivering transformational models of forensic, physical, and mental healthcare in police custody suites.

About the Role

As a Forensic Healthcare Specialist, you will be responsible for conducting clinical assessments to identify if patients are fit to be detained in custody. You will provide continued care, including the management of long-term conditions, minor illnesses, and injuries, as well as emergency treatment. You will also be responsible for mental health and substance misuse assessments and management, forensic sampling, and providing substance misuse therapies while in custody.

You will work collaboratively with other organizations within the suites, including the police, liaison and diversion, and drug services. Effective communication and documentation skills are essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct clinical assessments to identify if patients are fit to be detained in custody
  • Provide continued care, including the management of long-term conditions, minor illnesses, and injuries, as well as emergency treatment
  • Mental health and substance misuse assessments and management
  • Forensic sampling
  • Providing substance misuse therapies while in custody
  • Collaborative working, onward referrals, and signposting to external agencies
  • Maintaining accurate records to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of detained persons held in police custody
Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a background and professional registration as a nurse or paramedic. You will have extensive experience of working in a relevant specialty, such as general practice, A&E, walk-in centers, substance misuse services, prison healthcare, or mental health liaison services in an A&E. You will also have highly effective communication and documentation skills.

A minimum of 3-4 years of experience post-registration is recommended. Advanced skills, including non-medical prescribing, are also welcome.
