Full-Time Senior Neurology Consultant (Epileptologist)
The Neurology division at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a full-time Senior Neurology Consultant specializing in Epilepsy.
This department, located at the Royal Derby Hospital, provides a comprehensive General Neurology service, with specialized focus areas including Epilepsy, Headache, Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuro-degeneration (Cognitive Neurology, Motor Neurone Disease), Neuro-ophthalmology, and Botulinum Toxin therapy for Dystonia and Chronic Migraine.
Continuing Medical Education will be facilitated through participation in the educational programs at the Nottingham University Hospitals Neuroscience Centre.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be accountable for:
- Delivering the highest standards of clinical care in the management of Neurology patients.
- Collaborating with colleagues to oversee the daily operations of the Neurology Service.
- Providing education and training to Neurology Specialist Nurses, middle-grade doctors, junior staff, and medical students.
- Actively engaging in departmental and Trust-wide initiatives related to Clinical Governance and audit.
- Ensuring participation in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.

Job Duties
Responsibilities of the Role:
- Providing a comprehensive Neurology service to the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with fellow Consultants, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological conditions.
- Ensuring the ongoing care and treatment of patients under your supervision while fulfilling clinical duties as outlined in your job plan, allowing for appropriate delegation and training of staff.
- Offering coverage for Consultant colleagues during reasonable leave periods, including patient care and supervision of Neurology Specialty trainees, junior doctors, and Specialist Nurses.
- Overseeing the professional development, training, and management of Neurology Specialty trainees and junior medical staff, including teaching, examination, and accreditation responsibilities, while contributing to local and national postgraduate and continuing medical education activities.
- Participating in the clinical governance framework of the Trust, particularly within the Directorate, including clinical audit and research initiatives.
- Implementing Infection Control Policies as established by the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
- Maintaining compliance with personal continuing medical education requirements with the Trust's support.
- Staying informed of professional guidelines such as the Duties of a Doctor and GMC Performance Procedures, acting in accordance with them.
- Being prepared to undertake additional responsibilities for limited periods within the specified geographical area or at other hospitals in the event of a major incident.
Qualifications
Essential:
- MBBS or equivalent qualification.
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise.
- Evidence of entry on the GMC Specialist Register or CCT, or being within six months of attaining CCT at the time of interview, with entry on the GMC Specialist Register by the commencement date, or evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (to be provided prior to interview).
Desirable:
- Further higher qualification such as MD or PhD.
Experience
Essential:
- Extensive experience in Neurology with a sub-specialty interest in Epilepsy.
- At least six months of experience in a UK healthcare setting at a middle-grade or senior level.
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for obtaining UK CCT in Neurology.
Desirable:
- Five years of supervised training in an appropriate StR equivalent training program.
Management Experience
Essential:
- Experience in supervising junior medical staff.
- Commitment to teaching fundamental clinical skills to both undergraduates and postgraduates.
