About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Cryogenics Engineer to join our team at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in designing and developing cryogenic systems for our STEP prototype fusion powerplant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop cryogenic systems, including process and equipment selection, and development of P&IDs, heat and mass balances, and numerical modelling supporting documentation.
  • Participate in the selection of design standards and validate designs against those standards through computation or experimentation.
  • Carry out analysis and validate analysis performed by others.
  • Ensure safety requirements are met and engage with industry and the wider cryogenics sector on innovative developments.
  • Supervise junior engineers or students and manage vendors.
  • Engage with partnering organisations and perform other duties as reasonably required.
  • Budget responsibility for up to £100,000.
Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Process Engineering or equivalent STEM subject.
  • Relevant experience in cryogenics or an adjacent field, such as process engineering, from a laboratory or industrial setting.
  • Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
  • Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
  • Experience with relevant environmental factors, such as high pressures, vacuum, and transient magnetic fields.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
