The newly formed Commercial Research (Pre-Contract) Team at the University of Bristol is a collaborative and welcoming group dedicated to assisting academic colleagues across various faculties in establishing advantageous partnerships with industry stakeholders. Our recent collaborations encompass diverse sectors such as energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, space, veterinary technologies, and education.
This team specializes in the initial phase of effective contracting practices, known as 'Pre-Contract Negotiation,' which is crucial for ensuring a seamless and efficient contracting process.
As the team grows, we are excited to offer a unique opportunity to spearhead initiatives related to industry-funded PhD studentships. As the primary expert in this area, you will provide guidance on relevant policies and processes while supporting academic staff in securing funding.
Key ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you will:
- Collaborate closely with stakeholders, including senior academics and specialists in legal, compliance, and finance, to establish agreed principles and preferred positions for industry-funded PhDs.
- Serve as the main point of contact for academics seeking to secure industry-funded PhDs.
- Engage with both internal and external stakeholders to advance proposals, including project specifications, pricing, and terms and conditions, ensuring timely completion and valid internal justifications that reflect the deal's structure.
- Utilize your exceptional negotiation, communication, and influencing skills to cultivate trusted relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Work alongside colleagues to continuously enhance and refine processes and support systems, ensuring that academic staff feel prepared and confident when pursuing industry-funded PhDs, while making the University an attractive partner for collaboration.
- Coordinate across various internal departments, often balancing competing priorities, to foster a collaborative environment that achieves optimal outcomes for the University and its partners.

- Experience working with stakeholders who have differing priorities, along with the ability to identify common ground for mutual benefit, ideally at the intersection of academia and industry.
- A background in relevant business roles that demonstrates strong business acumen, a commercial mindset, and a commitment to customer service.
- Knowledge of how PhD research projects are structured and executed.
- The capability to interpret complex information and communicate it effectively to a range of stakeholders.
- A preference for a dynamic work environment, managing a constantly evolving caseload.
