Main Responsibilities of the SENDCo

  • Oversee the daily implementation of the SEND policy and coordinate tailored support for students with special educational needs or disabilities.
  • Provide expert guidance to teaching staff, collaborating closely with parents and external agencies.
  • Maintain a strategic perspective on the provision for students with SEND, regularly assessing and improving the quality of support provided.
  • Engage with early years providers, other educational institutions, and various health and social care professionals as necessary.
  • Ensure the safeguarding and welfare of all students, adhering to school policies and the staff code of conduct.
  • Lead the High Needs In-School Provision while also taking on some teaching responsibilities.

Essential Qualities

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational excellence and raising achievement levels.
  • Prior experience in primary education with a solid understanding of teaching methodologies.
  • Completion of the National Professional Qualification for Special Educational Needs Coordinators (NPQ for SENCO).
  • Thorough knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and proven experience in a SENDCo role.
  • Ability to enhance existing processes and systems effectively.
  • Experience in delivering training and leading professional development sessions.
  • Capability to observe students and support educators with strategies aimed at improving student outcomes.
