Position Overview
We are seeking applications for a locum consultant role in the field of Virology within the Department of Infection at Barts Health NHS Trust. This position primarily operates from the Royal London Hospital while encompassing responsibilities across all facilities within the Barts Health NHS Trust network, as well as those associated with the East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership. The selected candidate will collaborate with fellow consultants to deliver a comprehensive Virology service across all Barts Health locations and partner sites.
Key Responsibilities
This is a remarkable opportunity to engage with a dynamic team of Microbiologists, Virologists, and Infectious Diseases specialists, while also working within a Trust that boasts an on-site diagnostic laboratory. The laboratory, situated at the Royal London Hospital, is part of the newly established East and South East London (ESEL) NHS Pathology Partnership, which integrates services from Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Virology and Microbiology laboratories are accredited by UKAS ISO 15189, providing a full spectrum of high-quality routine and specialized microbiology and virology tests for Barts Health and partner Trusts. Recognized as one of the Specialist Virology centers by the UK Clinical Virology Network, it stands as the largest NHS diagnostic laboratory in London and one of the largest in the UK, with plans for further expansion.

Job Duties
The successful candidate will integrate into the Department of Infection, joining a team of 15 permanent and 8 locum/honorary consultants. Responsibilities include providing diagnostic, clinical, stewardship, and infection prevention and control services to patients, staff, and local general practitioners, as well as engaging in departmental teaching activities, including training clinical scientists and specialist registrars in Medical Virology, Medical Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases.
This position entails a third-tier on-call commitment for Virology, primarily managed remotely. Depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications, there may be opportunities to participate in the Microbiology or Infectious Diseases on-call duties.
The workload is expected to align with a job plan of 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA), with final job planning occurring post-appointment.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess a registerable medical qualification (MBChB, MBBS, or equivalent) and hold Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) without restrictions. UK-trained applicants must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Virology or be nearing completion. Non-UK trained candidates must demonstrate equivalence to the UK CCT.
Experience and Skills
Essential qualifications include broad experience in clinical and diagnostic Virology, strong organizational skills, and proficiency in IT. Desirable qualifications may include experience in Infection Prevention and Control and a special interest that complements the existing team.
Leadership and Management
Candidates should demonstrate experience in clinical leadership and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams effectively.
Commitment to Education
Experience in supervising training doctors and teaching multidisciplinary teams is essential, along with a commitment to ongoing medical education.
