Lancaster, Lancashire, United Kingdom UKCEH Full time

Salary: £30,684 to £32,563
Working Model: Hybrid (50/50)
Employment Type: Permanent

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a dedicated Aquatic Ecology Research Assistant to join our esteemed team at UKCEH. This role is pivotal in supporting scientific research and generating essential data that aids researchers, businesses, and governmental bodies in addressing intricate environmental issues.

At UKCEH, we pride ourselves on making a significant impact through our scientific endeavors, which contribute to the well-being of both people and the environment. With over 60 years of accumulated environmental data, we are committed to advancing knowledge and fostering societal enrichment.

As a member of our team, you will enjoy:

  • 27 days of annual leave, increasing to 29 days after five years, plus 3 additional days for our holiday closure.
  • A 10% employer contribution to your pension.
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave (subject to qualifying criteria).
  • 24/7 access to support for physical, mental, social, health, or financial concerns, along with access to trained Welfare Officers.
  • Flexible working arrangements.

This role presents an exciting chance for an enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in freshwater ecosystems to join our Lake Ecosystems Group. Our dedicated scientists conduct vital research on lake ecosystems, focusing on their responses to environmental stressors such as climate change and pollution. Our comprehensive approach includes data analysis from ongoing monitoring programs, modeling, and experimentation to provide effective lake management recommendations.

In this vibrant and established team, you will be actively engaged in collecting essential samples and measurements during various field and boat-based freshwater surveys. You will also perform subsequent analyses in the laboratory and utilize computer programs. A well-organized and detail-oriented mindset is crucial, as you will apply a methodical approach in both laboratory tasks and field equipment management.

Your contributions will be vital in interpreting data, modeling, and reporting on ecological changes. Therefore, proficiency in computer programming and statistical methods is essential. We are looking for someone who is eager to collaborate on projects, open to innovative ideas, and possesses strong communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions.

Joining UKCEH means becoming part of a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that is dedicated to nurturing talent and supporting your career growth.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in campaign-based and routine fieldwork, including long-term ecosystem monitoring and sampling at experimental facilities.
  • Conducting laboratory analyses of water samples to assess their chemical properties and plankton communities.
  • Supporting water quality modeling, including data preparation, model execution, and result summarization.
  • Contributing to project reporting, including data summarization, visualization, and interpretation.

This role demands a high degree of autonomy, requiring you to work independently while exercising sound judgment and knowing when to seek guidance. You should be adept at managing and prioritizing a dynamic workload of both short- and long-term tasks while also providing support to your colleagues.

Current projects include:

  • The Aquatic Mesocosm Facility, which enables controlled studies of shallow lake ecosystems to understand the impacts of external factors like climate change.
  • The extensive long-term lake monitoring program in England and Scotland, which provides critical data for understanding and modeling environmental changes.
  • The Cumbrian Lakes monitoring initiative, recognized as the world's most comprehensive long-term lake study.

Qualifications we seek:

  • A qualification in Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or Zoology (e.g., HND/Degree).
  • Demonstrated experience in fieldwork and a passion for outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Experience in freshwater environments, with skills in identifying phytoplankton and/or zooplankton.
  • Confidence in laboratory settings, including chemical analysis and species identification.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to engage effectively with team members.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in field preparation and laboratory tasks.
  • An understanding of budgetary control and value for money.
  • A full UK manual driving license for transport to field and laboratory sites.

While not mandatory, experience in interpreting complex data and knowledge of statistical methods, along with programming skills in languages such as Python, R, FORTRAN, or VBA, would be advantageous.

This is a remarkable opportunity for someone looking to enhance their experience in the field. We offer further training and courses to support your personal development. If you believe you fit this description, we look forward to your application.

Please submit your CV along with a cover letter highlighting your relevant skills and experiences, as well as your enthusiasm for the role and for working with UKCEH.

We welcome applications from international candidates; however, please note that we are currently unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
