Position Overview

Our advanced Testing laboratories are dedicated to comprehensive blood grouping and screening for microbiological indicators utilizing state-of-the-art automated technology. Each blood donation undergoes thorough screening for atypical antibodies, and a selection is also typed for a diverse array of antigens to meet the specific needs of patients requiring antigen-negative blood. We are seeking a Lead Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) with specialized expertise in diagnostic and testing laboratory operations.

The ideal candidate will possess a specialized qualification in Transfusion or Transplantation Science. You will be adept at executing, analyzing, and interpreting both routine and intricate testing or diagnostic evaluations. The successful candidate for this senior Biomedical Scientist role will oversee a team of Biomedical Scientist personnel and provide essential technical guidance for the department. You will serve as a mentor, positively influencing the team while fulfilling the responsibilities associated with this managerial position.

Key Responsibilities

In this capacity, you will be expected to:

  • Execute, analyze, interpret, document, and report both routine and complex testing evaluations.
  • Oversee the daily operations of one or more teams within the laboratory, ensuring the quality of work and the accuracy of results produced.
  • Provide technical direction and significantly contribute to the quality management of your designated section.
  • Train Healthcare Scientist staff and act as a mentor, taking on some responsibilities of the Laboratory Manager during their absence as needed.
  • Be prepared to work during weekends and Bank Holidays in times of operational necessity, with appropriate prior notice.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience at a Master’s level, or equivalent higher specialist knowledge obtained through examination by a professional body or demonstrated through relevant postgraduate study/qualifications and experience.
  • A management qualification or evidence of management training and experience.
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and development, with a willingness to pursue additional qualifications pertinent to the role and laboratory operations.
  • A demonstrated commitment to personal Continued Professional Development (CPD).

Experience

Essential Experience

  • Extensive experience in a diagnostic/testing laboratory with in-depth knowledge of Transfusion science.
  • A thorough understanding of relevant statutory policies, standards, and guidelines, including Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology/UKAS Accreditation, and BCSH guidelines.
  • Proven experience in training and mentoring staff.
  • Proficiency in Information Technology, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
