Orkney, United Kingdom NatureScot Full time
Job Purpose Overview

NatureScot serves as Scotland's dedicated agency for nature conservation. Our mission is to collaborate with various stakeholders to address the climate crisis and combat biodiversity decline, ensuring a sustainable and nature-rich future for everyone. We are seeking individuals with a robust background in ornithology to join our terrestrial ornithology team. The successful applicant will become part of a team of ornithology consultants, offering expert guidance to support casework and policy formulation.

The role involves providing insights on casework inquiries, particularly those concerning the effects of renewable energy projects on protected avian populations. Additionally, the position includes the formulation of policies and guidelines that promote proactive conservation of bird species, addressing species conflicts, recovery initiatives, and monitoring efforts. The successful candidate will collaborate with fellow NatureScot staff, the Scottish Government, and other organizations involved in research, conservation, and land management to enhance knowledge and foster relationships in these critical areas.

The role may require travel to locations lacking public transport access. Flexible working arrangements may be available for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide clear and proportionate guidance on ornithological matters to NatureScot personnel. This primarily involves addressing the impacts of renewable energy developments on avian species, especially in designated areas. Additional topics may include forestry, non-renewable projects, wildlife offenses, and licensing inquiries.
  • Contribute to the creation of policy frameworks that support best practice advice. This will involve managing survey and research contracts and disseminating relevant data and information.
  • Offer ornithological guidance and assistance for species recovery, wildlife management, and the enhancement of protected area networks.
  • Provide support and advice to departments within the Scottish Government, the voluntary sector, land managers, and, when necessary, law enforcement agencies.
  • Play an active role in the effective operation of the terrestrial bird team, particularly through collaboration on cross-cutting issues.
  • Engage with NatureScot initiatives and systems, including corporate record-keeping and health and safety protocols.
  • Identify and participate in training opportunities that enhance personal skills and deepen knowledge in avian ecology and conservation.

Required Skills (Refer to these in your Supporting Statement)

  • A degree in a field related to avian ecology or conservation, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated scientific credibility in ornithology and related advisory roles.
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific and conservation management topics in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Familiarity with the statutory framework governing avian conservation in the UK and internationally.
  • Understanding of the renewable energy sector and associated ornithological concerns.
  • Capacity to work effectively as part of a dispersed team and independently.
  • Competence in planning while remaining adaptable to evolving priorities, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques for avian population modeling, including collision risk assessment methods.
