Job Purpose Overview :

NatureScot serves as Scotland's leading environmental agency, dedicated to collaborating with various stakeholders to address the pressing challenges of climate change and biodiversity decline. We are seeking individuals with a robust background in ornithology to enhance our terrestrial ornithology team. The selected candidate will integrate into our existing group of ornithology consultants, offering expert guidance to support policy formulation and casework. This role encompasses: providing insights on casework inquiries, particularly those concerning the effects of renewable energy projects on protected avian populations; crafting policies and guidelines that promote proactive conservation efforts for bird species, including conflict management, recovery initiatives, and monitoring strategies. The post holder will engage with fellow NatureScot professionals, Scottish Government representatives, and other entities involved in research, conservation, and land management to foster knowledge and collaborative relationships.

The successful candidate may need to travel to locations lacking public transport access. Flexible working arrangements may be considered for the right individual.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Deliver clear and balanced advice on ornithological matters to NatureScot personnel. This primarily involves addressing the implications of renewable energy developments on avian species, especially within designated conservation areas. Additional topics may include forestry, non-renewable energy projects, wildlife offenses, and licensing inquiries. The majority of the workload will focus on providing guidance to Area Teams. Participate in the formulation of policy strategies that support best practice recommendations. This will primarily involve managing survey and research contracts and disseminating relevant data and insights. Offer ornithological advice and assistance for species recovery efforts, wildlife management, and the preservation and enhancement of protected area networks. Provide support and guidance to governmental departments, non-profit organizations, land managers, and, when necessary, law enforcement agencies. Contribute to the efficient operation of the terrestrial bird team, particularly through collaborative efforts on cross-disciplinary issues. Engage with NatureScot initiatives and systems, including corporate record management and health and safety protocols. Identify and participate in training opportunities that enhance personal skills and deepen knowledge in avian ecology and conservation.

Required Skills (Refer to these in your Supporting Statement)

A degree in a field related to avian ecology or conservation, or equivalent professional experience. Demonstrated scientific credibility in ornithological matters and the advice provided. Ability to articulate complex scientific and conservation management topics in a clear and accessible manner. Familiarity with the legal framework governing avian conservation in the UK and internationally. Understanding of the renewable energy sector and associated ornithological concerns. Capacity to work effectively both as part of a distributed team and independently. Proficiency in planning while remaining adaptable to evolving priorities, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of analytical techniques for avian population modeling, including collision risk assessment methods.
