Job Overview

Position: Principal Scientist in Laboratory Research

Reporting to: Group Leader

Contract Type: This is a full-time, fixed-term position.

Research Group Overview

The research group focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying infection and immunity related to apicomplexan parasites, which pose significant public health challenges. This includes studying the Plasmodium parasite, responsible for malaria, and the Cryptosporidium parasite, linked to cryptosporidiosis. The laboratory employs various in vitro and in vivo models to simulate human infections, aiming to expand the knowledge base for developing new therapeutic interventions. Techniques utilized in the lab encompass genetic engineering, flow cytometry, advanced microscopy, immunofluorescence, high-throughput screening, and sequencing.

Role Responsibilities

This position plays a crucial role in a funded partnership aimed at advancing chemical biology approaches to identify tools for dissecting biological pathways and pinpointing potential therapeutic targets across various disease contexts. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading multiple research initiatives independently, designing and executing experiments with strategic guidance.
  • Presenting findings at group meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences.
  • Documenting research outcomes for publication and managing revisions.
  • Overseeing laboratory operations, including database management, supply ordering, budget monitoring, and equipment maintenance.
  • Training and mentoring junior lab members in essential techniques and protocols.
  • Collaborating with Science Operations and participating in key meetings.
  • Drafting risk assessments and standard operating procedures while ensuring safety compliance.
  • Assisting colleagues with research projects and fostering collaboration.
  • Managing long-term research projects and partnerships with other scientists.
  • Providing technical expertise for the development and optimization of methodologies.

Essential Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a parasitology-focused laboratory.
  • Proficiency in culturing and maintaining malaria parasites, with experience in high biological safety environments.
  • Capability to independently lead exploratory drug discovery projects, identifying lead candidates and testing their mechanisms of action.
  • Strong communication skills to liaise between various research teams and convey findings effectively.
  • Experience in training and supporting junior researchers to enhance project success and career growth.
