Role Overview:

We invite you to become a vital member of our team as the Tunnel Operations Lead at Connect Plus Services. In this pivotal position, you will oversee a dedicated team of Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance Technicians. Your responsibilities will include guiding your team through their assignments, performing site inspections to guarantee safety, efficiency, and productivity, and managing all facets of personnel administration for the directly employed workforce.

In this role, you will engage with a diverse range of internal and external partners, including the Tunnel Maintenance Manager, Tunnel Maintenance Coordinator, Operations and Maintenance Schedulers, Depot Shift Manager, Network & Tunnels Operations Centre, Highways England, and subcontractors. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the upkeep and enhancement of one of the UK's most heavily trafficked transport networks, significantly impacting the safety and operational efficiency of our services.

Key Responsibilities:

Familiarize yourself with the functionality of all electrical and mechanical equipment within the Dartford River Crossing, other M25 Tunnels, and M25 pump stations. Champion the Zero Harm objectives by enhancing risk awareness, promoting risk reduction strategies, and exemplifying a proactive safety culture throughout Service Delivery and our supply chain. Assist in achieving CPS's Business Plan Objectives in Service Delivery by meeting performance review goals and establishing aligned and measurable objectives for your direct reports. Prepare and present comprehensive work briefings that clearly outline the work methodology, identify onsite hazards and risks, and detail the control measures to be implemented. Ensure that all work activities are effectively managed, adhering to the established work methodology and implementing control measures as outlined in the briefings. Engage positively with both directly employed and subcontracted personnel to address any concerns regarding the methodology or identified control measures, collaboratively developing solutions to ensure safe and efficient task completion. Conduct thorough debriefs for all work activities at the end of each shift to resolve any identified issues and incorporate lessons learned into future operations. Actively participate in ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, including Primary Response, Secondary Response, reactive and planned preventative maintenance, Environmental Protection Act 1990, and Severe Weather protocols. Perform pre-site evaluations of all defect locations and planned maintenance sites to determine work methodologies and resource requirements for efficient task execution and coordination opportunities. Provide first-line management for all Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance operatives, overseeing day-to-day personnel management, including development, succession planning, training, performance evaluation, conduct, leave requests, timekeeping, and absence management, ensuring prompt resolution of issues and accurate record-keeping. Maintain adequate resource levels to ensure the safe execution of all work activities, proactively identifying any risks to the program and proposing potential solutions. Ensure accurate documentation for all activities, recording completed work, utilized resources, and associated costs appropriately. Collect information to demonstrate third-party accountability and proof of completed work to assure our clients. Contribute to the creation of risk assessments and method statements, involving the workforce to identify gaps and areas for improvement, and incorporating this feedback into future revisions. Deliver toolbox talks that engage the workforce, ensuring a clear understanding of the topics and gathering feedback for continuous improvement. Manage fleet operations, ensuring compliance with Drivers Hours recording and Vehicle Defect reporting. Uphold the values of Connect Plus Services. Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm. Support the implementation of sustainability initiatives at CSUK.

Candidate Profile:

The following qualifications and experience are essential:

Qualifications & Skills:

SSSTS or SMSTS certification. Recognized Electrical Apprenticeship. Relevant qualifications such as City & Guilds Level 3. 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. Authorised Person in LV & HV is advantageous. MEWPS certification. Confined spaces training. Inspection & Testing C&G 2391 certification. CSCS / ECS Card (Supervisor Grade). Qualification as an Approved Person under the BB ESSW requirement for HV and LV work.

Knowledge and Experience:

Familiarity with generators and switchgear up to 11KV. Proficient in fault finding using schematic diagrams. Comprehensive experience in Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical Maintenance. Understanding of current Health & Safety legislation. Capability to perform electrical installation work in compliance with current legislation. Previous experience in road tunnels or building maintenance. Experience in highway maintenance programs delivered within budget and time constraints. Knowledge of health and safety, quality, and environmental standards within a highway context. Competent in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook (or equivalent). Valid UK driving license. Proven experience in managing and leading multidisciplinary teams. Strong verbal communication skills to engage operatives, colleagues, and management effectively. Ability to produce clear and concise briefings and handover notes while maintaining comprehensive records.

Work Environment:

Depot-based role with travel across the network as necessary.

Line management responsibilities for operatives.

Daywork hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, with Nightwork hours: Monday to Friday, 20:00 to 05:00 (3 weeks every 3 months).
