As a vital member of the site management team, you will collaborate closely with clients, architects, engineers, planners, and subcontractors to ensure project success.

We are looking for an experienced Construction Engineer with a solid background in overseeing and coordinating the construction of structural components on projects valued between £10-100m, across various sectors such as commercial, educational, and mixed-use developments.

Your Responsibilities

The Lead Construction Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all instruments and equipment are maintained in optimal condition and calibrated according to specified schedules.

You will also ensure that necessary controls and documentation are upheld concerning the engineering activities outlined.

The following tasks will be performed by a site-based individual under the supervision of the Construction Team Leader:

  • Complete requisitions for materials and verify received goods.
  • Conduct quality assessments for structural steelwork, drainage systems, underpinning, earthworks, and excavations.
  • Maintain survey instruments and keep accurate records.
  • Verify setting out information.
  • Establish primary and secondary dimensional controls.
  • Check and document control points.
  • Coordinate temporary works and falseworks, including installation and dismantling checks.
  • Complete permits for loading and striking.
  • Request materials for in-situ concrete works and secure necessary approvals.
  • Oversee concrete deliveries, including pre and post-pour inspections.
  • Conduct sampling and cube tests.
  • Maintain a site diary and ensure good housekeeping practices.
  • Manage and coordinate the construction of all structural elements.
  • Set out and uphold structural accuracy and main/internal gridlines, including levels.
  • Implement the Project Management Plan, engineering procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensure that appropriate quality records are generated.
  • Organize work to minimize risks to personnel, equipment, and materials.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and relevant statutory provisions as outlined in the Health and Safety Operating Procedures.
  • Communicate foreseeable risks to affected individuals.
  • Exemplify high personal standards in health and safety practices, including conducting safety inspections on-site.
  • Report all accidents and hazardous occurrences in line with company protocols.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and specifications accurately.
  • Compile as-built drawings and create construction drawings for reference.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and Total Station effectively.
  • Compile quality assurance sheets for sub and super structural elements.
  • Advise on buildability concerns as necessary.
  • Assist in preparing scopes of work and reports as required.
  • Conduct site surveys, leveling, and setting out.
  • Calculate cut and fill quantities.
  • Manage subcontractors, including checking the setting out of subcontractor work.
Who We Are Looking For
  • A degree or HNC/HND in a construction-related or engineering discipline.
  • A valid CSCS Card.
  • A health and safety qualification is desirable (ideally SMSTS).
  • CITB (or equivalent) temporary works training.
  • Competence in carrying out on-site management tasks.
  • A minimum of 2 years' post-graduate experience in site engineering.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with the project team.
  • Proficiency in using the latest total stations and digital information.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in all site engineering activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to liaise effectively with various professionals, including construction managers, quantity surveyors, subcontractors, architects, designers, and other engineers.
  • A broad technical knowledge of construction.
  • Strong organizational skills and a methodical approach to work.
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Confidence in using IT packages and systems, including AutoCAD and setting out/cut and fill software.
  • A collaborative team player with a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Experience or understanding of BIM and computer-aided measurement tools.
  • A valid driving license.
