Position Overview

We are seeking a knowledgeable professional in the realm of eighteenth-century collections at The National Archives to assist in the development and execution of our public engagement initiatives leading up to a significant historical milestone.

Role Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the pertinent collections housed at The National Archives and demonstrate the capability to uncover compelling narratives surrounding the historical conflict and its ramifications through original inquiry. This role requires a strong communicator who is passionate about public engagement.

Job Details

This is a full-time position, with flexibility for part-time arrangements, job sharing, and adaptable working hours considered based on departmental needs. A blend of on-site and remote work is permitted, with the expectation that candidates will be able to travel to our Kew location for at least 60% of their working hours.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A postgraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in eighteenth-century history or pre-modern colonial history;
  • Proven expertise in eighteenth-century and/or pre-modern colonial collections at The National Archives;
  • An active research profile with recognized credibility in academic and research communities related to the eighteenth century or pre-modern colonial history;
  • A solid grasp of contemporary scholarship on the American Revolution or the ability to cultivate specialized knowledge in this area;
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate research into accessible formats for diverse audiences (including exhibitions, public presentations, and educational activities);
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of fostering effective relationships and networks both internally and externally;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage time effectively while working independently within a collaborative team.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in researching collections for exhibitions or other public formats;
  • Demonstrated ability to research and present underrepresented histories;
  • A proven track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
