Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom RPS Group Full time

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Water Sector)

We are actively seeking to recruit several Senior Mechanical Design Engineers specializing in the water sector for various significant long-term projects throughout the UK.

RPS, in collaboration with Tetra Tech, has secured a £100 million exclusive framework with a major utility provider to enhance river health in the Northwest region of England.

With over two decades of partnership with this utility provider, RPS is at the forefront of innovative projects. As we transition into the next AMP cycle, this presents an exciting opportunity to engage in the water sector, working alongside dedicated organizations to drive positive environmental change.

Under this decade-long framework, RPS will focus on program optimization, solution development, and selection of the most advantageous options considering value, carbon footprint, and cost. Our objective is to provide outstanding water services that promote a sustainable and flourishing Northwest.

About Our Team:

The RPS Water Consulting team comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts dedicated to Asset Management and Operational Strategy formulation for our clients in the water industry, facilitating effective business planning and execution. This dynamic field presents challenges and opportunities that demand innovation, commitment, and teamwork to fulfill our clients' requirements.

Beyond the framework with the utility provider, we collaborate with numerous prominent water companies across the UK, maintaining a diverse portfolio of long-term agreements.

Our Water Consultancy division is engaged in prestigious AMP programs leading into future cycles, ensuring a stable career trajectory and the chance to leave a lasting impact.

About You:

You will possess experience in generating technical outputs, including specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, schedules, and reports, and be well-versed in collaborative planning and solution design.

Your role will involve providing engineering design inputs in collaboration with other disciplines, producing General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.

Success in this position requires strong communication skills, enabling you to deliver technical presentations to clients and fellow engineers, as well as contribute to collaborative design discussions, technical workshops, and safety reviews.

A solid understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes is essential, along with experience in evaluating existing site infrastructure to develop and implement mechanical designs.

By joining our team, you will not only engage in exciting projects and collaborate with industry leaders but also make a significant impact on the lives of many, leaving a legacy for future generations. As a vital member of our team, you will play an essential role in the water sector, partnering with major water companies to ensure a positive and lasting influence on the communities we serve.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Engage in a diverse range of projects across significant long-term frameworks with water companies.
  • Strive for positive outcomes for both projects and the community.
  • Collaborate closely with Senior and Principal Engineers and other stakeholders to support project delivery.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members.
  • Interpret technical drawings and utilize AutoCAD and/or Inventor.
  • Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare detailed reports and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the creation of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Prepare mechanical design deliverables, including calculations, reports, specifications, datasheets, drawings, schedules, and procurement documentation.
  • Support the project team in adhering to Designer duties under CDM, including producing design risk assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance systems and procedures.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Strong technical understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Experience in the water industry is highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with the design of pumping systems and pump selection.
  • Proficiency in using P&IDs to create equipment, valve, and pipe schedules.
  • Experience in producing specifications.
  • Knowledge of Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations and safety-focused design.
  • Understanding of various contract procurement methods, particularly ECC (NEC) forms.
  • Ability to manage work according to time, cost, and quality standards.
  • Support junior staff in their technical growth.
  • Willingness to travel to operational and construction sites as needed, ensuring safety during asset surveys, inspections, and testing of mechanical equipment.
  • Familiarity with design tools and software such as AutoCAD or similar packages is beneficial but not mandatory.

Qualifications:

  • An IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
  • Chartered status or progress towards chartership for Senior or Principal levels.
  • Affiliation with a professional institution such as IET, InstMC, or CIWEM, or in the process of obtaining membership.
