University Hospitals Dorset is seeking a dedicated Community Specialist in Palliative Care to join our esteemed team. This role offers an opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical rotations, focusing on neuro-specialist rehabilitation and acute care.
The successful candidate will gain exposure to diverse clinical areas, including ENT/voice, head and neck oncology, and acquired brain injury, with ample opportunities for joint teaching, shadowing, and professional development tailored to individual clinical interests.
We are committed to career advancement, with recent investments in training that include competencies in FEES and videofluoroscopy, supported through our regular clinics. This position is classified as Band 7.
Main Responsibilities
As part of a collaborative and supportive team, you will contribute to service improvement and team development initiatives. Our Stroke team is actively involved in significant research studies, providing avenues for participation in innovative projects.
This role entails working across multiple sites, ensuring a comprehensive service for our patients. Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and bank holidays, is essential to meet the needs of our 7-day service.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Criteria:
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
- Dysphagia Competency
- HCPC registration
- Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Desirable Criteria:
- Competencies in videofluoroscopy
- RCSLT level 3 competencies in tracheostomy assessment and management
Experience:
Experience in managing a variety of conditions, including respiratory and neurological disorders, in an acute setting is essential. The ability to independently assess, manage, and discharge patients with communication disorders and dysphagia is crucial.
Technical Skills
Essential Skills:
- Ability to assess and treat patients with complex conditions
- Proficiency in supporting alternative communication aids
- Strong prioritization skills for clinical and non-clinical tasks
Knowledge:
A solid understanding of the pathology related to neurological and respiratory conditions, as well as knowledge of clinical governance and national frameworks, is essential.
Personal Attributes
Strong time management skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure are key attributes for this role. Reflective practice is encouraged to enhance personal and professional growth.
Language Requirement
Proficiency in English is required to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
