Job Description for Assistant Project Manager

National Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Project Manager to join our team. As a key member of our Project Management Authority, you will play a critical role in managing projects that deliver nuclear science to benefit society.

Your project management skills and attention to detail will enable industry-leading scientists, engineers, and analysts to work together to deliver unique projects using cutting-edge technology. This is a challenging role that offers opportunities to grow, adapt, and develop new skills in a fast-moving area.

As an Assistant Project Manager at NNL's Preston Laboratory, you will be supporting the successful delivery of NNL customer and capital investment programmes. You will typically be on site 3 days per week, with flexible work and an occasional need to travel to other NNL sites, suppliers, or other industry partners.

Main Responsibilities
  • Manage discrete work packages with minimal supervision, typically managing projects of classification 1 or 2, with project budgets in the range £10k's to £100k's, and low business risk.
  • Have financial responsibility typically in the range £10k's to £100k's, and be fully responsible for the time, cost, and quality of the work you are managing.
Essential Criteria
  • Have a working knowledge of applying the following in non-complex situations/projects: consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of projects (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities, and issues, and quality requirements).
  • Support the preparation, approval, refining, and updating of business cases that justify the initiation and/or continuation of projects in terms of benefits, costs, and risks.
  • Prepare and maintain project requirements, determining the best means of satisfying requirements within the context of project objectives and constraints.
  • Secure the provision of resources needed for projects from internal and/or external providers.
  • Develop and agree budgets for projects and control forecast and actual costs against them.
  • Support the preparation and maintaining schedules for project activities and events, taking account of dependencies and resource requirements.
  • Identify and monitor project risks (threats and opportunities) and knowledge/use of risk management tools.
  • Maintain and apply quality management processes for project activities and outputs.
  • Implement where necessary, protocols to change the scope of projects and update configuration documents as required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project and P6.
  • APM Foundation Qualification.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance.
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Experience in managing projects in a nuclear or related industry.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
