Role Overview:
We are seeking a caring and devoted Autism Support Specialist to provide individualized and small group assistance to students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ideal candidate will be instrumental in guiding these students through the school environment, facilitating their access to the curriculum, and enhancing their social and communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver customized support to students with autism, aiding them in engaging with lessons and participating in school activities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and educators to execute personalized education plans (IEPs).
  • Assist students in overcoming communication, social interaction, and sensory processing challenges by employing suitable strategies and tools.
  • Encourage students in developing essential life skills, fostering their independence and self-esteem.
  • Track and document students' progress, providing constructive feedback to educators and parents/carers.
  • Promote a positive, secure, and inclusive atmosphere that acknowledges the needs and capabilities of all students.
  • Work in partnership with other staff members to ensure a cohesive and supportive approach to student care.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young individuals with autism, ideally in an educational context.
  • A solid understanding of autism and associated challenges, including communication and sensory requirements.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to establish trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a composed demeanor, particularly in challenging circumstances.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team and adapt to the individual needs of students.
  • A dedication to fostering inclusion and diversity within the educational community.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications in special educational needs, autism, or related disciplines.
  • Experience with specific autism interventions or tools, such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or social narratives.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding and child protection policies.
