Role Overview

As an Assistant Life Support Technician, you will support Life Support Technicians (LSTs) and Life Support Supervisors (LSSs) as needed. When functioning solely as an ALST, you will essentially be in a trainee capacity for LSTs.

It is essential that you are well-versed and fully knowledgeable about the diving system you will be operating.

Key Responsibilities

Core Functions

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Maintain a detailed logbook documenting your work activities.
  • Understand and adhere to the responsibilities outlined in IMCA D 013.
  • Assist and support the LSS and LST as required, ensuring safety and efficiency under their guidance.
  • Familiarize yourself with all components of the Dive System and the specific operating procedures relevant to your role.
  • Operate all equipment safely, following the Oceaneering Dive System Manuals, particularly focusing on medical equipment and sanitation systems.
  • Aid the LST in ensuring that all equipment is suitable, well-maintained, and compliant with relevant standards.
  • Be knowledgeable about chamber blow-down preparation and operational procedures, as well as decompression protocols.
  • Ensure that all diver bedding, clothing, and bell run equipment are clean and dry before use.
  • Maintain hygiene standards, including proper food handling and cleanliness in the galley.
  • Foster good communication with chamber occupants, addressing the divers' needs respectfully.
  • Be well-acquainted with all Oceaneering Diving Operations documentation, including the Diving Manual and Emergency Procedures.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency and contingency procedures specific to diving operations, ensuring regular drills are conducted.
  • Assist in maintaining chamber hygiene standards.
  • Participate in drills and exercises in support of the LST, with guidance as needed.
  • Keep an accurate LST logbook, ensuring it is signed by the LSS and complete all necessary documentation.
  • Conduct effective handovers.
  • Implement company management of change procedures.
  • Assess the ongoing competence of personnel under your supervision.
  • Promote a culture that prioritizes Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) matters.
  • Communicate effectively with the dive team, marine personnel, and deck crew.
  • Encourage team members to raise concerns and address issues promptly.
  • Support team functions that foster collaboration and trust among colleagues and supervisors.
Additional Responsibilities

  • Uphold the Company’s quality assurance and control standards across all operations and diving activities.
  • Oversee hygiene within the Saturation System, ensuring compliance with Diving Health and Hygiene Procedures.
  • Maintain registration with the competency assessment scheme and be knowledgeable about emergency procedures and equipment.
Safety Considerations

Ensure understanding and adherence to safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.

Other Responsibilities

Execute tasks in alignment with the Company’s Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality Systems.

Carry out assigned duties with diligence regarding the Integrated Management Systems.

Strive to minimize waste and advocate for environmentally friendly practices, contributing to continuous environmental improvement.

Supervisory Duties

This position does not entail direct supervisory responsibilities.

Reporting Structure

Reports to the Diving Operations Manager, Offshore Manager, Life Support Supervisor, and Life Support Technician.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of diver training to IMCA-recognized ALST qualification.
  • Successful offshore medical examination suitable for the work area.
  • Completion of an offshore survival course appropriate for the work area.
  • Training in leadership aspects.
  • Familiarization with employer company protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of personal safety practices and procedures on board.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Familiarity with company safety management systems, including incident reporting.
  • Awareness of factors affecting dive team safety and security.
  • Knowledge of dive system operations.

  • Familiarity with the company hazard observation system.

  • Familiarity with IMCA guidelines.
  • Awareness of workplace and environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge of relevant IMCA HES guidance.
  • Understanding of hyperbaric evacuation system procedures.

  • Loss of pressure in saturation systems.
  • Emergency chamber aborts.
  • Loss of communications or power.
  • Handling trapped or incapacitated divers.
  • Conducting fire drills and emergency response.
