Position Overview

We invite applications for the role of Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellow at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This position is designed to enhance the Neuro-Ophthalmology service.

The Ophthalmology Department at our institution is renowned for its comprehensive outpatient services and day case surgeries, employing local anaesthesia techniques.

Our team consists of 15 consultants who deliver both outpatient and surgical care, covering a wide spectrum of Ophthalmology subspecialties. We maintain strong collaborative ties with various specialties, ensuring integrated patient care. The eye service is further supported by a dedicated team of staff and associate specialist doctors, Specialty Registrars, an Orthoptic Department, Optometrists, and technicians. Our facility is equipped for pre-operative assessments and biometries, as well as advanced imaging techniques including fundus fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, optical coherence tomography, corneal topography, Heidelberg retinal tomography, ocular ultrasound, and a distinguished wet macular degeneration service.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will engage in 8 clinical sessions, which will encompass outpatient clinics, inpatient ward duties, and Neuro-radiology meetings. Additionally, two sessions are allocated for postgraduate education, which may be utilized for educational pursuits or research initiatives. Flexibility in scheduling is integral, and the successful candidate will be expected to adapt to varying demands. After a six-month period, timetables will be rotated to ensure comprehensive exposure to all neuro-ophthalmic specialist clinics.

Role Objectives

The primary goal of this fellowship is to significantly enhance the trainee's capacity to diagnose and manage a comprehensive range of Neuro-ophthalmic conditions, including disorders affecting both afferent and efferent pathways. The ultimate aim is to equip the trainee with the competencies necessary to oversee a neuro-ophthalmology service as a sub-specialist. Special emphasis will be placed on developing the trainee's understanding of neuroradiology through regular collaboration with the imaging department. The fellowship will also provide targeted training in the management of acute neuro-ophthalmology cases, in conjunction with the inpatient neurology service.

Funding is available for approved study leave in accordance with the Trust's study leave policy.

Comprehensive administrative and secretarial support will be provided.

Candidate Requirements

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree from a recognized institution;
  • Full GMC registration.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent part-time experience) or relevant competencies;
  • Prior experience in Ophthalmology.
