Job Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a forward-thinking Associate Librarian for Special Collections and Archives to lead the Special Collections and Archives department. This pivotal role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the Special Collections and Archives, providing strategic recommendations regarding budget, staffing, and operational requirements.
  • Designing and implementing programs to acquire, process, curate, and facilitate access to diverse special collections.
  • Enhancing collection discoverability through the creation of EAD finding aids and maintaining the library's digital presence.
  • Leading initiatives on collection access and digitization in partnership with library stakeholders.
  • Promoting unique collections through innovative exhibitions, educational programs, and outreach efforts.
  • Assisting in grant proposal development to secure funding for archival projects.
  • Establishing a sustainable framework for managing born-digital archives.
  • Engaging in professional service commitments related to special collections and academic librarianship.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Library/Information Studies from an ALA-accredited program, with a focus on archival education or a relevant Master's degree in American History, African American Studies, or a related field, complemented by archival experience or coursework.
  • Supervisory experience along with a minimum of two years of professional experience in archives.
  • Proven ability to evaluate, select, and process rare and special collections.
  • Familiarity with best practices and national standards, including EAD, DACS, MARC, and Dublin Core.
  • Knowledge of preservation principles and a demonstrated commitment to outreach and instruction.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with a collaborative work ethic and a dedication to public service.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work.

Additional Considerations:

Preferred qualifications include certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists, experience with ArchivesSpace or similar systems, familiarity with web archives and digital repositories, successful project management and grant writing experience, and coursework in Virginia state history with a focus on African American history and culture.
