We are in search of a Senior Optical Systems Specialist with a versatile skill set to join our Optics and Fibre Optic Research & Development team within the Fibre-Optic Manufacturing center. As a member of a global R&D team, you will spearhead the advancement of a variety of products centered on fibre optic amplifier subsystems for applications in free space optical communications, aerospace, and remote sensing. The role encompasses a range of responsibilities related to the design, prototype assembly, and testing of fibre-optic and photonics-based components and subsystems, typically spanning Technology Readiness Levels 4 to 7.

This position necessitates a well-rounded individual with a comprehensive knowledge base in fibre optics, photonics, and associated technologies. While collaboration within a team is essential, you should also possess the ability to work independently – a self-motivated individual capable of driving projects forward and resolving issues. The role offers a diverse array of activities, from technical engagement in initial product concepts to hardware development, customer interaction, and leadership duties.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide technical guidance in the design and development of high-power fibre-optic amplifier subsystems and their components. Ensure that projects and programs adhere to deadlines, milestones, and budget constraints. Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team that includes optical, mechanical, and electronic design engineers. Actively participate in and oversee prototype construction and assembly, including fibre-optic splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly, and opto-electronic testing. Develop and implement test plans for functional and environmental validation of photonic components and systems, ensuring compliance with target specifications. Engage with clients, negotiate specifications, and present results clearly and concisely for both internal and external stakeholders. Foster strong working relationships with technical and business experts across G&H. Deliver technical reviews and generate management reports based on technical activities.

Ideal Candidates Will Possess:

A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the optics/photonics industry with a focus on optical amplifiers. Commercial experience in the product development of fibre optics or laser technologies. Practical experience in constructing and testing fibre-optic components or opto-electronic modules. The capability to create proposals and manage the financial and technical dimensions of development projects. Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to engage clients in a technical and collaborative manner; comfortable creating and delivering technical presentations. A degree or PhD in Engineering or Physics with a specialization in Optics, Photonics, or Fibre Optics.
