Position Overview
The selected candidate will operate under the guidance of the clinical nursing team, adhering strictly to established practice or national protocols and guidelines.
The Blood Collection Specialist will be tasked with performing venepuncture to acquire blood specimens from patients, based solely on direct referrals from a General Practitioner or nurse practitioner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support and execute routine activities related to patient care in collaboration with other nursing team members and as instructed by General Practitioners.
- Ensure patient comfort and relaxation while confirming their consent for blood sample collection.
- Collect blood samples in accordance with established training and procedures.
- Store samples in suitable containers.
- Label all samples accurately and legibly to verify patient identity.
- Verify patient identification against the request from the General Practitioner/nurse and confirm with the patient whenever feasible.
- Document the collection of blood samples in the patient record following practice protocols.
- Ensure timely dispatch of samples to the designated laboratories.
- Report any discrepancies to a senior staff member.
- Inform the General Practitioner/nurse of any significant patient concerns.
- Collaborate with and support the administrative team members.

Health & Safety Responsibilities
- The post-holder will implement and oversee a comprehensive range of health and safety and infection control measures as defined by the practice.
- Be aware of national standards for infection control and cleanliness, as well as regulatory, contractual, and professional requirements.
- Ensure the proper and safe management of the specimen process, including collection, labeling, handling, and storage.
- Manage and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice, ensuring availability and correct usage by staff.
- Promote hand hygiene practices.
- Actively observe current practices related to infection control and cleanliness, ensuring adherence to procedures.
- Safely manage sharps procedures, including training, usage, storage, and disposal.
- Maintain a tidy, clean, and sterile work environment, free from hazards, and initiate corrective actions when necessary.
- Identify, report, and rectify health and safety hazards immediately upon recognition.
- Keep work areas and patient areas clean and sterile, identifying issues and risks in other areas of the practice.
- Participate in periodic infection control training.
- Manage spillage control procedures and training.
- Oversee decontamination control procedures and equipment maintenance.
- Maintain sterile environments.
Personal and Professional Development
