About the Role

As a Senior Signalling Designer, you will play a crucial role in developing and delivering innovative engineering solutions for Network Rail's signalling systems. You will be responsible for both design and checking of engineering schemes, ensuring they meet customer requirements and adhere to all relevant technical, safety, environmental, and quality standards.

Your Responsibilities

  • Prepare and check detailed design drawings and documentation.
  • Evaluate the affordability and feasibility of engineering designs, ensuring they meet programme requirements within budget and time constraints.
  • Develop comprehensive engineering options, considering safety, reliability, operational capacity, maintainability, construction ease, environmental impact, and whole life cycle costs.
  • Secure all necessary base data, review compliance with relevant standards, and utilize risk identification and evaluation methods to compare and select optimal solutions.
  • Stay abreast of the latest signalling technologies through training, briefings, and mentoring activities.
  • Maintain strict change control on scope development, evaluating cost, time, and performance impacts in collaboration with project engineers and management.
  • Prepare detailed engineering data packages for commencement of detailed design and provide technical support to other departments as required.
  • Liaise effectively with Designated Project Engineers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct site visits, including organizing and undertaking correlation activities.
  • Lead specialist investigations and surveys, analyze results, and report findings to relevant authorities.
  • Handle technical correspondence, interact with customers, attend meetings, assist in estimating, planning, and workload allocation for the team.
  • Contribute to design activities associated with testing new or modified systems and installations.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Working towards an HNC/HND or equivalent industry-recognized qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • IRSE Licence holder as a Signalling Principles Designer or Signalling Design Verifier, or an appropriate engineering competence.
  • Demonstrable aptitude for option development and strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of rail engineering principles and relevant experience in the principal discipline, with a good understanding of other related disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and communicate clearly.
  • Appreciation for all stages of the rail infrastructure lifecycle.
  • Risk assessment competence and Construction Design Management (CDM) competence.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

  • Foundation degree in engineering.
  • Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution.
  • Experience with specific signalling systems or technologies.
