Special Educational Needs Support Assistant

Teaching Personnel is in search of a committed and empathetic Special Educational Needs (SEN) Support Assistant to become part of a secondary educational institution rated 'Good' by Ofsted. This full-time role is focused on providing essential support to students with special educational needs, ensuring they can thrive in their learning environment.

Position Overview:

As a SEN Support Assistant, your primary function will be to assist students with special educational needs across various classroom settings. You will collaborate closely with educators, SEN Coordinators, and other support personnel to deliver customized assistance that aligns with each student's unique requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualized Support: Offer personalized support to students with SEN, aiding them in their daily activities, completing assignments, and grasping lesson content. Your role will be crucial in helping these students surmount educational challenges and gain confidence.
  • Classroom Assistance: Engage within the classroom to facilitate the effective management of SEN students, ensuring their active participation and support during lessons. This includes adapting instructional materials to cater to diverse learning preferences.
  • Group Interventions: Lead or assist in small group sessions aimed at enhancing social skills, communication, and academic performance, tailored to the specific needs of the participants.
  • Behavioral Guidance: Support the management of behavioral challenges, employing strategies that encourage positive conduct and assist students in regulating their emotions. Collaboration with the SEN Coordinator and pastoral team will be essential in addressing ongoing issues.
  • Personal Assistance: Provide necessary personal care support, ensuring that all students are treated with dignity. This may involve assistance with feeding, mobility, or hygiene, depending on individual needs.
  • Team Collaboration: Work in tandem with teachers, SEN Coordinators, and other staff to track student progress, share insights, and adjust support strategies as needed, contributing to a nurturing educational atmosphere.
  • Family Communication: Maintain ongoing dialogue with parents and guardians, providing updates on their child's development and collaborating to foster the student's growth both academically and personally.
  • Documentation: Keep precise records of the support provided, including daily logs and progress reports. You will play a key role in documenting the effectiveness of interventions and contributing to the overall assessment of student achievements.
  • Professional Growth: Engage in training and development opportunities provided by the school and Teaching Personnel, enhancing your experience working with SEN students in a secondary educational context.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with children or young individuals with SEN is highly valued.
  • A background in education, psychology, or a related discipline is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Patience, empathy, and a dedication to supporting the educational and personal growth of students with SEN.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach to addressing student needs.
