Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in physiotherapy.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Desirable

  • Current Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the musculoskeletal specialty.

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Proficient in systematic assessment of common MSK conditions, including spinal and peripheral issues, utilizing sound clinical reasoning.
  • Capable of assessing for serious or non-MSK diagnoses and taking appropriate action based on local protocols.
  • Develop comprehensive, patient-centered management plans that include shared decision-making.
  • Skilled in delivering exercise prescriptions for MSK conditions in both individual and group settings.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients throughout their care journey.
  • Competent in manual techniques, including orthopaedic assessments and therapy.
  • Understand the application of adjunct therapies in managing MSK conditions.

Desirable

  • Ability to triage MSK referrals appropriately.
  • Experience in assessing and treating specialized referrals.
  • Training in communication techniques such as motivational interviewing.

Experience

Essential

  • Post-registration clinical experience in core specialties at a band 5 level, particularly in MSK outpatient settings.
  • Experience managing MSK conditions referred from various sources.
  • Commitment to providing equitable treatment to patients from diverse backgrounds.

Desirable

  • Previous experience at a band 6 level in a relevant clinical specialty.
  • Familiarity with NHS settings or equivalent.
  • Ability to step in for team leads in meetings and operational tasks.

Non-Clinical Knowledge and Skills

  • Capable of presenting information clearly to staff.
  • Work effectively within a team, demonstrating excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage caseloads and support others.
  • Ability to thrive in a busy outpatient environment.
  • Manage challenging patient interactions with appropriate strategies.

  • Experience in audit processes and quality improvement projects.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Experience in delivering training to staff and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervision experience with junior staff and students.
